« on: July 12, 2007 - 06:13:17 PM »
I thought maybe you could see factory marks to remove the roof skin but I dont see any. My car had a black vinyl top but after the tree fell on it I removed it. :crying: I just wanted to see pics of the roof skin being removed so I dont screw mine up taking it off. ??? Has any one replace sections of the roof supports and if so could you show me pics on that too. I am green on body work. I will post pics so you can see. thanks for all the help

p.s. any thing you guys and gals would like to add would be great. :1zhelp: Thanks again mopar#1
P.s.s. if anyone knows where I could find parts for this in nwIowa or tristate area that would be cool too.

This pic should help get you started. Looks like it's time to buy a spot weld cutter too. Good luck on your project.

You are better off just replacing the roof. You can usually pick up a nice one for around $200-$400. I'm facing the same thing because mine is rusted through in several places becaues of the vinyl roof. The guy that is going to do my bodywork said he will just take it off at the seams and put the new one back on.

I can definitely help you out in all aspects of this project.

It's not as bad as people make it out to be, its just a question of how methodical you are. There are TONS of factory spot welds, maybe somewhere in the realm of 500.  First, remove all of your trim, your windshield, and your interior/seats. Remove the body seam caulk and melt out/ remove the lead covering the factory roof seams. Locate your spot welds and center-puch them. Purchase a Rotabroach spot-weld cutter and start drilling through the welds.
Now your skin can be popped off - if you want to go that far - I needed to due to severe rust. You may not need to. You only may need to replace sections - which is a lot easier.
You can see my process here:

Donor Roof skin alone: < http://www.pbase.com/dmz73/image/72546223 >

After some fabrication, cutting, welding, rough shaping, much drilling, some filling and planishing, - (i.e. fine dent removal) prime and temporary paint
This is how it looks: < http://www.pbase.com/dmz73/image/79164807 >

I bought a donor roof (structure and skin) for 150. I just used it for the skin, but you need it for pieces of both.
I have a spare structure in its entirety I will be getting rid of. See my pics for more info...
This is the Donor structure I still have: < http://www.pbase.com/dmz73/image/72558284 >

If you want to do it in sections, its really easy. Just make sure you cut out far enough past the dented structure so that the donor sections can be grafted in properly.

If you have any othe rquestions, don't hesitate to ask.

Best regards,

Dan

DMZ73 thanks for your info that will help me out alot. What might you use to put it back on far as welding and covering up the weld spots and seams. Just wondering if you would want to sell the frame supports and if you could ship. If not let me know and thanks again for all your help.

p.s. I will post more pics so you can see damage better if you would like.

Absolutely.  Also you would want to place several jackstands all over the bottom to equalize the pressure.  Of course a rack or flat table that the chassis rests on would be best but not everyone is Boyd or Chip so.....
