New Chally owner in CT
« on: July 15, 2007 - 11:18:58 AM »
Hi all.

I've been a closet fan of the e-bodies for a long time.  My favorite Matchbox as a kid was a 70 Challenger.  I remember that because I called it a Camaro and my older brother corrected me.  When I got old enough to buy my first car, I couldn't afford/find an E-body, and have played with FMJs, Late Bs, A-bodies and trucks for the last 12 years.

Well, at Carlisle I sold my AutoX car (a Dodge Diplomat) and took that money and plunked it down on a 71 Challenger.  Its essentially a rolling chassis that needs a lot of work.  Its originally a 318 console auto car w/ a/c.  Green w/ black gut.

Front clip is all new with rebuilt suspension.  Half of the floor needs welding in, quarters need to be replaced, and at least one of the rear frame rails needs replacing (a PO ran fuel lines through it  :scared: )

It comes w/ a lot of spare interior and exterior parts but no engine/trans.

I already know this is going to be a multi-year project (first "resto" a 79 300 that I'm still fixing after it was "done") with a goal of this being a competitive SCCA Solo C-Prepared car that can still be driven to Carlisle.

Looking forward to reading and lurking for the next couple months until I get it transported up here.

Welcome to the board.

There is a guy down by the RI(MA) border with a free running 318/904 combo in the for sale section.

Thanks all for the welcome.

I've already spent a couple hours reading through old posts, so I'm definitely glad that there are others that have tried some things and can say if they will/won't work.  Learning from others "mistakes" can save me some time and $$$$.  Also, the rule book is law so I have to watch what I do or else I end in Run Whatcha Brung class and can have my butt handed to me (which I was doing just fine btw in F-stock w/ a Dippy).  Expect a witches brew of chassis & suspension mods.

Flat hood?  I'll probably sell it to get a repro T/A hood.  I'm thinking light gunmetal metallic, accentuated with the T/A stripes and spoilers.

Engine will be a 408 magnum (have a complete Magnum engine hanging out already) backed by a 4 speed (cause AutoX is hell on Torqueflites).

again, thanks for the warm welcome!

Welcome out of the closet. This is an excellent support group, we meet on wednesdays. That is a nice project you got there and it sounds like you are going into it with the right frame of mind knowing it isn't going to happen overnight. Plenty of info out here on this site to help you.
