Steering box options
« on: July 15, 2007 - 03:41:42 PM »
I am replacing my steering box on challenger soon. I ran to show and put on nearly 200 miles at 65 to 75 MPH. The car is fine but the higher speeds make me nerves with how touchy the steering is. The box also leaks and bleeds down the power steering fluid. Is flaming river the only box worth while or is there others. I have heard of guys using units out of older squad cars. Are these better than stock ones on?

Is it manual or power?  Firm feel has some options either way.  www.firmfeel.com

Mine is doing the same.
Is it really worth while to go with an aftermarket or just replace the seals? Just had to ask as they are pretty expensive.                                                                                          :feedback:

Would a new pump be in order or just the box?

the box is a worthwhile upgrade IMO , I am not a fan of the loose feel of the power steering either
the pump may need to be changed If it is leaking

I am thinking about Firm-Feel for my cuda project, it has power streering.  MJS73, do you know what the difference is between the stage2 or stage3?  What is it you like best about the stage2?  Just looking for suggestions. Thanks!

I got a rebuilt box from AutoZone for around $125 a few years ago.  It has a lifetime warranty and that means I can return it in one day or forever to get a full refund or an exchange.   Just don't give the your core right away if you want to "TEST"  with it.

Have you tried adjusting the screw on your old one?  Also,  check your return hose from the box to power steering pump. It's an often overlooked low pressure leak.   Try changing it.

The adjusting screw you are talking about is on the top of the box with alock nut correct? My box is leaking at the top seal, so I have to pull it anyway. The autozone box, did it tighten up your steering?

The rebuilt box tightened my steering along with a smaller diameter steering wheel. I had to adjust the screw a little bit once installed. If you want it even tighter, pay double and get a firm feel box.    Try an AutoZone box then return it if you don't like it.

I am thinking of trying this part number. Mopar #3643375. Here is the link I read on it. http://www.allpar.com/history/mopar/steering-chuck.html
Let me know what you guys think.

Hey challengerrt,

I need to replace my steering box as well, due to a 1" dead spot in turning.  I like the idea of a firm feel replacement.  I read the write up on the police firm-feel part no. 3643375, but didn't see where to obtain sales information.  Does allpar actually sell the unit or who do we contact?  Thanks, Charlie 74 Challenger

I contacted mopar and the part number / part is no longer available through mopar. He suggested a local parts store so I went to carquest and looked up a unit in there book and sure enough you have a different part number for police and non police vehicles. I dont have the part number with me but I can look it up again in the next couple of days. They are not as tight as the boxes by firm feel but are much better than the stock boxes and are much cheaper (about $150.00 if I remeber correctly). I think the box I looked up was for a fury police car. I forgot I am pretty sure you have to change the pitman arm too.

Carquest part number     27-6515. You will also need the pitman arm with the bigger spline (1 7/32"). I am looking for the one that is the right length. When I find it I will post.
