Did you count the turns lock to lock to see if it is the 20:1 box instead of the 26:1?  The standard box was 3-1/2 turns lock to lock.

Ok today I opened my box with my gear box in and thought I would check the numbers on the box for some reason. Sure enough the numbers were not the  276515 for the cop car box instead the number for the regular box. I call up the carquest I got it from and they said that was the replacement number the other number was no longer used. So I went to the local salvage yard and found a couple of cars that could be candidates. What years/ models were used as cop cars? Is there a letter in the vin to help id them?

70ChallengerRT.. what numbers did you check? the box I got mine it had the exact part # I ordered on it...It is actually an A1Cardone part and from what I was told for some reason they are hard to come by. the year
I looked up was actually for 1989 Dodge Diplomat SE Cop car....
Here is the link directly to the part on the mfg's website.

Shelby, I dont have the box hooked up so i cannot check the # of turns lock to lock.

The gear box I ordered was for a 89 diplomat police car. I only have a carquest close. I looked online a napa.com and it looks like they can still get it. I didn't look how many turns it takes. How many should my stock box have? How many will the police box have?

The turning lock to lock turn doesn't change. The internal valving removes the overassist that is normally associated with mopar power steering.

I guess it was the longer pitman arm that caused my count to come up 2-1/2 turns in my friend's T/A.

So the firm feel or Cop box just makes it harder to turn and doesn't change the ratio like the new set of gears available from Direct<>Connection?

The pitman arm is what adjusted the # of turns (quick ratio).... not the gears in the box itself.

my mom had a '72 gran fury new and the power steering was way over assisted with zero feedback.
(but it was faster than the monte carlo's ;0) so i wouldn't get one of those boxes.

Okay .. I did the measurements and the boxes are the exact same! Only very minor differences.. and nothing that should affect fitment. So I am very happy .. I drove plumcrazychris's Challenger briefly and the steering was very nice.

As far as the pitman arm you should be able to order a large sector pitman from Advanced or any autoparts place for between 30 to 75 bucks.. I am going to get a new one. My orginal one is shot.

EvilTwinATX,
OK, So if I have a '71 Cuda, and I want to put in the '89 Diplomat Police box (#276515), all I will need to do is order a Pitman arm for a '73 Cuda, and everything should swap & fit right in place of my old box & pitman arm?
Thanks,
miker71   :)

Miker71 - I ordered the pitman arm for the 89 Diplomat... and it was a dead match for the one that was one the car previously. The only difference was that the toothed opening that fit onto the gear box shaft was a hair bigger ... I had tried to use the original pitman arm from my old box but it was a little too small to fit on the new box.
But like I said I used my old arm as a reference and other than that it seemed to be the exact same part.

So to make a long story short...yes, I believe you can buy a matching box and pitman arm for a 89 Dippy Police Package car and it should bolt right in.

Note: I haven't tried the steering column coupler yet.. they looked the same, but I didnt have one handy to try. If you are switching from a manual steering car to a power steering car you will have to address that issue as well.

I should know within the next couple of weeks if this whole thing is going to work out. I dont see any issue though as my friend Chris has done this a few times on his cars.
