Mad Max Interceptor Police car exhaust note?
« on: July 20, 2007 - 12:38:14 PM »
I can't help it.  I'm deeply in love with the the sound of the exhaust note of the Interceptor police car from Mad Max.  From the start up to the acceleration to the idling, it is soooo coool, IMO!  (Sorry, I know it's a Ford...)

What mufflers you think make that sound?  Definately not stock or Flowmasters.....you think straight throughs like Cherry Bomb?  Sounds too loud and raspy to be turbo mufflers.....  what do you think?

It's just a movie.

A particularly cheaply made, poorly dubbed with god awful production values. (Oh sure, I love it of course) Any sound you hear including most of the dialog has been dubbed over and over for different countries and languages but especially  the Car and Motorcycle sounds are all made up from different sources.

All that having been said I think the choice of the day was Cherry bombs

360, the american version is dubbed over. The australian one is fine.

Of the 3 yellow/red/blue cars used in the first movie, 2 were ex-cop cars (351 clevland/auto - if i remember) and the one that went through the caravan was an ex taxi (slant 6, already in awful condition).

Yupe, the 351 is a great sounding engine IMO. Andrew is right, the American dub version is crap, ruins the movie. Get yourself the Aussie version and watch it how it was made with the original accents, makes it twice as good.

Could it possibly be a chambered exhaust ?  They have a different sound to them.

I did a search for Lukey mufflers and found a few sites, one indicated their glasspack was a popular movie muffler.  Another indicates that in the US they are marketed as Dynomax, probably just recently.

Now that you mention this, I listened to the clip a couple more times and it does sound very familiar.   My 69' Mustang had a 302 with a set of Dynomax Turbo mufflers.   It has been 10 or 11 years since I had it, so maybe my mind is playing tricks on me, but it sounds pretty darn close.

:2thumbs: Thanks for all the info guys!  I appreciate it!

I was leaning toward like they sounded like glasspacks but thought that it had a throatier sound to it.  Glass packs sounded a wee bit raspier.

Did a little searching.  Turns out it's a straight through design but has more chamber than a glasspack.  The name I see kicked around that is similar to the Lukey is the Dynomax Ultra flow.  Here's some info.

Ships worldwide for around $10 US and it's the 3 box set in the Aussie accent.
Takes Paypal. The DVD is zone 4 (downunder) but 90% if not all modernish DVDs are multi zone anyhow.

DEFINITELY worth getting. You'll laugh at the American version (or burn it).  Nothing against the American accent at all, it just doesn't suit this fairdinkum Aussie movie, it kills it. It's like having Vanishing Point dubbed in African.
