Anybody Mount Denso Alternator on SB with Eddy Heads?

My electric fan project is snowballing.  After find out that my Powermaster alternator doesn't put out enough amps at idle I bought a reman Denso unit.  However, it won't mount properly as the positive stud is way to close to the head as there is more meat sticking out on the Eddy heads.  If I cut the stud there will be only a couple of threads left.  I could mount the alternator higher or possible lower but special brackets will have to be made.  Anybody done this mod before?

Had to cut my stud on stock heads, put a terminal end and the nut on the stud, cut as close as you can (of course leave a littttle for a mess up. you can always go shorter) and it should work

yup, its a popular mod and the output post nearly always has to be shortened. The back of the unit sits very close to the head. I had to have the pulley on mine undercut so as to bring the alt fwd to get it off the head. I created a pigtail lead for the field connections and cut a hole in the side of the rear dust cover. I put a quick connect on it to make R&R easy. I suppose you couild do that with the output lead as well but you better use a good quality large amp connector     EDIT: I would only consider the main output quick-connect scenario as a very last resort!

Are you talking Edelbrock heads?  I can see how the stock head can be dealt with.  Add at least another 1/2" of meat on the Eddy head and I don't see how it can work.  After looking at the mounting brackets on a Dodge Ramcharger I am thinking about making brackets that will move the mounting point up another 1.5 to 2" but I would sure like to find something easier.

I think Mancini may have large brackets that place the alternator outside and away from the block and head. It may only be for BB but you might want to check them out

That side mount regulator makes the conversion doable then for anyone. That looks like the Denso mini alternator. Hopefully they have side mount regulators for the larger (and cheaper) Denso's.

After looking at those links again, I think they are just selling rebuild kits for Denso's and custom brackets to put them on Mopars. Also. it seems the cool little mini Denso's only put out 60a? Possibly you should take one of the larger high amp output Denso's like mine to an alt shop and see if they have a compatible regulator with the side mount instead of rear mount. Or buy the bracket sets that would put that little jewel well outboard of the engine. It might cool better that way as well.

Mine doesn't have the internal regulator.  Is there another 90 amp Toyota alternator that will work?

Okay I finally got the Denso 130 amp alternator mounted.  It's not that simple as I had to take a bracket from a late 80's?? Dodge pickup and cut and weld it to make it fit.  It still needed to make a fancy aluminum 1/4" spacer between the head and bracket to make it work although I could of deleted that if I had my own welding machine but it saved me another trip to the welding shop.   The alternator is now moved over a few inches from the stock location and I can use the back terminal.  The alternator still hits the head and unless I use the last 2 inches of belt adjustment so selecting a 50 inch belt was a bit of trial and error. I ran AWG 8 wire to the starter relay with a 40 amp maxi fuse.  This should be enough for charging and the 18 amp fan and the fuel pump.

Sorry for the delay! Here are some pics.  I'm sure there must be an easier way of altering the bracket but...
I could modify the bracket again so I don't need the spacer between the head and bracket.
