Go to DTR site lots of reading ,type in death wobble .It's common on older ones, newer dodges are better I was told . I have a 04.5 CTD .I talked to a guy that was making a nice replacement and a steering box support for them also ,It should never wear out .One I saw had a helm joint end . Get the good one,if keeping it , factory replacement will do the same thing again.I can look him up if needed can't recalled his name ,think it was around 300 too ,could be the one mentioned earlier . :clapping:

Track bar and shimmy shock are the usual culprits. Make sure tire balance is good and if not running stock rims the offset also creates a problem. Larger than stock size tires also contribute to DW. Adjust the caster of the front axle as low as possible too.

Stock rims and tire size.Shimmy shock=steering stabilizer?Already replaced.
The Thuren comes highly recommended by a bunch of people on the truck boards.$300 but worth it if it I don`t have to experience Death Wobble again!

Had that happen to me a long time ago. Replacing the stabilizer shock took care of it.

Hello All, great site here !  Glad to have discovered you all...

Don't have a Cuda / Challenger, yet, but certainly looking.

I DO have a 1996 Ram 4x4, and have dealt with this issue, so I couldn't resist commenting.

Yes, I concur, the death wobble is quite related to 2 or 3 primary causes:

1) Worn / loose trac-bar.   (4x4 Ram trucks only)  This is the only link designed to hold the axle side to side - the ball / stud joint which mounts in the DS frame bracket can come loose, allowing the axle to move an inch of side to side travel - NOT good.

I rebuilt my trac-bar with a Luke's Link - a very cost effective solution - $ 80 vs $ 300 for a new trac-bar.  Luke's makes it greaseable & adjustable.  www.LukesLink.com

2) Worn out shocks.  This should be an obvious contributing factor - Heavy truck, heavy engine (Cummins, especially so...), heavy springs, BOING, BOING......death wobble on the way....Many great shock solutions out here...I prefer Rancho R9000's for their adjustability & warranty.

3) Worn out / poorly designed lower steering column bearing:
This is a 'stealth cause' /contributing factor....more on the "steering control" end of things, rather than the suspension / alignment end of things.

Apparently, Dodge knew the columns in the 2nd gen Ram truck had issues - early on (94-96 or so...) they gave Ram owners who complained new columns.  After a while, it looked like a money pit....so they began ignoring the issue, or just allowed this cause to be passed off as some other cause - until guys started replacing every single from end part, only to find the steering wander, play or 'clunk, rattle' noise issue to get worse.   That was me.  Thankfully, I discovered these 3 factors: trac-bar, proper shocks & worn / bad column bearing, and dealt with them, short of replacing all the front end components.  Truck is now solid in all conditions, towing heavy load in crosswinds, etc - no worries.

Here's the column fix:

Cheers, hope this helps someone chase down the gremlins.....RamPatriotExpress

97 Ram 2500, 4x4, turbo-diesel with 172,000 miles and never a problem.  Have replaced ball joints but not because of the DW.  Never heard of the problem on these vehicles but have experienced it in brand X.  I'll have to go looking for some pot holes.  Shouldn't be a problem here in Washington where they are as common as rain drops. A great site for technical issues on these trucks is: www.turbodieselregister.com.  I'll check that site out. PK

The Moog track bar has a lifetime warranty on it. Can't say it's the best bar, but at least you will never have to pay for it again.
If I cant fix it, it's broke
