Argent or Black?
« on: July 27, 2007 - 01:42:13 PM »
I would like some opinions please. I have a choice to make, argent or black grill and tail panel on my 71 Challenger?  ???

The car has a black grill and tail light panel on it now. But I have a choice of either argent or black setups for both. The car has the R/T stripes but it is not an R/T. Someone started to make a clone out of it but only changed the hood and put on the stripes.

Should I change it all back to argent, since that was most likely the original color? What do you like, and why?  :feedback:

I wish I had some hard info on this , I believed that the rear panel was black on the R/Ts But I was talking to a friend last night about this & he saw a 1 owner original 71 R/T with an argent rear panel , for sure the grille was black on an R/T & I like the dark deep look better
it is your car though so do what you like best

My 70 R/T also came with the SE trim package, so it had a black grill, with the argent tail trim, wide rocker moldings and the rest of the SE trim.  I personally like it that way.

Dave,

This is all you need, me posting in one of your threads.

My sorta T/A hooded car came with a black grill and headlight bezels, but I swapped them out for argent silver. I just like it better. Keep in mind, the 71 grill is plastic, as opposed to my 70 being aluminum.

Having said that, I think that black looks better over plastic... Thus my vote here.

I have a 71 too. It was 383-2 (before the hemi) car, but I plan on putting a side stripe on it w/o the R/T. I like the unique medium argent that was used that year front and back on the non-R/T cars, so I am going with that.

Don't ask for an explanation, but: personally on the 70 and 71 Chally's I like the black grille and the argent tail pannel, but for the 72-74 models I like black at both ends of the car. So Dave, what do you like?  :roflsmiley: It's always good to ask and get a feel for ideas etc. but since the car is already altered and unless you plan to put it back to stock...............do it your way. Your still goin hear 50 reasons why it should be done differently no matter how you decide to finish it off, so just borrow my line, "If you don't like what ya see, look the other d@mn direction."  :smilielol:

I agree with the "make it the way you like" camp. That being said I prefer argent over the blacked out tail and grille. The person who had my Challenger before me painted part of the grille body color and I really liked it. I most likely will not do it that way this time as I am putting it back as close to factory as I can but I think it looked better, almost like a color keyed 71 'Cuda grille.

I am starting to think maybe argent would make the car not so dark looking.  :pullinghair:
Still not sure yet...  :dunno:

You think? I didn't think they came in that color.  :dunno: I thought it is a medium argent for the grill and tail. Is it right that they used 3 argent colors, light argent (70 wheel centers), medium argent (grills and tail panels) and dark argent (71 wheel centers)?

I have some dark argent paint now... Thanks Russ, now I am realy confused...  :bricks1:

The argent on my grill and tail panel matches my 71 Rally center caps.  :clueless: Maybe 71 grills used a different argent than 70?

Glad I could stir the pot some more.  :stirpot:
