Hemi pullies not lining up
« on: July 30, 2007 - 09:44:46 AM »
Recently bought the right pullies but yet they don't line up exactly. The W/P pulley looks like it needs to come out about a 1/4".
I could put washers in between the pulley and the pump but then the shaft that the clutch fan assembly goes on will not be sticking out very far. Any suggestions?

Is it the stock damper?
Are these factory pulleys or reproduction aftermarket ones?

I looked at the dampner and it has the rubber insulation in between in the back so it must be an original. I can send a close up of it if anyone can identify an original Hemi pulley. I hope so because an OEM repro replacement is over 300 bucks.  I bought this engine as it is so it's past is unknown.

The pulleys are reproductions. Maybe the dampner needs another 1/4" pushed on? Or shave the bolt back area of the harmonic balance pulley on a big belt sander? Or washer in between as I mentioned?

Anyone with a pic of theirs I can compare? Whats the thickness of the dampner?

Once again I stumbled onto my own answer to my question. This time was just plain luck I found out about it. Anyone ever resort to using one of these?

Topcat,   How about a stock fan spacer.  Have it machined down on the back side to the correct width. It already has the center locationg shaft in the middle.

Would probably cost more to machine that down than the part I just bid on.

Machining isn't as much as you think.

:iagree: w/shelbydogg, I was going to suggest the same thing. I think you can space the water pump pulley out enough with the shims you are getting, but I think you will lose the locating nub for the fan. This is the exact same problem I had with my march pulleys that I sent back.

Ntstl,

I noticed in your sig that you run Squirt with EDIS.  I'm setting up my Cuda  with edis coilpacks too. Where did you get your 36-1 wheel adapter?

I put them on yesterday and they lined up. May be off still by just a hair.

Did you trial fit your alternator to see if that lines up too? I'm looking for pulleys on my hemi and I have the same problem!

I haven't mounted the alternator yet. I just need to put it back together. I rebuilt it and cleaned it up.  I did manage to remove the original pulley on it. I already bought a Hemi Altermater pulley that is supposed to be correct to go with the rest of the pullies i have now. So I plan to try it out soon. Another thing I did was that I found a correct date code water pump for my engine and bought it. I'm thinking that might be why things weren't lining up? I had an aftermarket aluminum WP.
