A Visit From Mr Murphy
« on: July 30, 2007 - 11:29:25 PM »
Sunday evening my unwelcome friend Mr. Murphy, who likes to keep me on my toes for his own personal enjoyment, decided to take out both of the AC (window) units in my house. One by way of a dead thermostat and the second by putting the kibosh on it's compressor. So today i took just enough time off from work to pick up a Sears Kenmore 75121 12K BTU unit.
My next door neighbor was ready to help me with the install but thoughtful Mr. Murphy wasn't quite through as the new unit which is destined for my bedroom is built for 115 Amps; the current (no pun intended :bricks1:) outlet is wired for 220. The electrician is scheduled to drop by tomorrow mid-morning to make the change at both the outlet and circuit box. A second night of living like the pioneers cooling by box fans. Insert melting smileys here.......................
92 degrees in the kithchen right now, likewise in my bedroom....................  :faint:
On the positive side i've discovered a new way of dieting - kick the heater on during summer and kiss all that water weight goodbye  :eek4:

Why didn't you just get an HD extension cord and plug the unit into another outlet until the electrician got there?

Russ,  Return the 115V unit & trade up to a 220V...the energy saving of the more efficient 220 unit will pay for itself not to mention the cost of changing the service.

Yep, 220 is much better.  The two hots send no current throught the ground, causing less stray voltage.  Everything in Europe is wired 220 IIRC.

Sorry to hear about the heat.  Even up here in WI we are getting it.   :walkaway:

Geeze, I was still trying to figure out who you friend Mr. Murphy was who removed 2 AC units from your windows... I thought he stole them!  :roflsmiley:

Then I got the joke....  :thinkerg:

For probably $30-$50 more, you can trade up to a much bigger 220v unit, and the cost will still probably be less than having an electrician do the work for you. Added benefit is that the bigger unit will cool several rooms, or make your one bedroom so cold that Barry will feel at home if he ever comes to visit. :roflsmiley:

Crud...tunnelvision i guess :bricks1:

Too late about returning the AC unit, the electrician has already completed the change. This is a short term cooling fix though; after my Challenger is done (sucking the life from my wallet), i'll be setting my sights on a modern central heat/air unit. Sometime after i get home from work the unit will be installed...errr, should be installed  ::)

Don't feel bad, I had to read through it twice before I got the joke.   :2thumbs:

Mr. Murphy of "Whatever can go wrong (losing two ac units in one weekend) will go wrong at the worst possible time (at the front end of a week's worth of triple digit heat indeces) :walkaway:
