RV Compressor with R-134 Freon works!
« on: July 31, 2007 - 02:15:54 PM »
I just reinstalled all of the under hood A/C parts into my '72 Cuda, using all stock parts. I was told by a few others that the new freon does not work in the older V-style compressors.  Sorry to say that they were wrong and the system blows VERY VERY cold with only 2 cans installed.   I even used an old dryer (bought off of the ground at last year's Mopar Nats) and  after pulling a vacuum and leaving it for 2 days sealed, it worked perfectly.   I still have about 45 Lbs of R-12 but I only use it for my Challenger.

I even used the R-134 with UV dye in it from WalMart and picked up a $1.86  black light bulb there too.  Now, I can easily find any future leaks, by looking for any green glow at the joints.

I've converted many late model R-12 cars to R-134 with success before but this is my first mopar V-style compressor.

My department guys. Yes it will work. If you ever have to change the seal use a ceramic seal not a cast iron. POA oil would be a wise thing. Your system should not be prone to leaks because of the seals used. Your system capacity is down a little with 134. A vacume is the best thing you can do for it. BUZZARD

I used some green o-rings for R-134 on all of the joints when I put all of the lines together and I put a couple of ounces of the oil charge that's used with R-134 Freon.  The pack of O-rings were at AutoZone for about $12.  The Oil Charge was the small can at WalMart.

Nothing else was changed.  I bought everything at swap meets. Compressor and brackets, all lines, and used dryer at last year's Mopar Nats, found the condenser for $5 at Carlisle this year.     I did notice that my condenser has 2 rows of tubes though.  My Challenger, still running R-12 has only one row of tubes. I don't know if that really matters but I figure that 2 rows are better than one.

Sounds great Rob.  I wondered if that would work.   :2thumbs:

Proper O rings condensor has more capacity. Both good things.
