73, where do you guys put your front speakers............
« on: August 01, 2007 - 09:12:42 AM »
Man, some one in my cars past cut holes in the door panel and installed front speakers. Problem  is the window handles hit the plastic grills when letting down. Now the window handle also hits the door panel on the other side of the speaker grill. Plus, he did not drill a hole in the door frame for the wires, just ran them over the door gasket behind the door  panel. I wish to clean this up and install a better looking , sounding system.....any suggestions.....thanks........J

I'm in the same predicament you are in.  The previous owner cut the door panels (rather sloppy work) and cut up the metal behind the hole to get the speaker to fit.  I bought some low profile speakers and didn't use the grille.  They look pretty good and the door handle no longer hits them.  I figure this would be a good solution until I can bring myself to pay 300 bucks for each new door panel.

I've seen a bunch of guys cut the kick panels instead of the door panels.

You could put two small speakers in the oval spot in the dash.  That is what I did, sounds okay for a cheap fix.

I was going to suggest using the kick panels instead of the door panels, but as long as you have damaged door panels you may as well use the holes for a low profile speaker as suggested.

I am assuming no one is making replacement kickpanels with moulded in speaker cutouts yet. This could be chaged back to original very easy.    J

Don't do it , unless you have extra kickpanels around. Just put really good speakers in the back or buy an I-POD..as you know door panels are not cheap....

On my DeSoto, I took out the original speaker from the dash, and got room for 2 small, round, and Extremly good speakers in the oval hole, and then some biggies in the back...

You definitely don't want to hack up original door panels.  :nono: The kick-panel idea is good since repro's are made now. Just be aware that you are limited in depth as far as the speaker is concerned, so you can't go crazy.

Post some pics of the installs.  I used to do high end auto components.  Maybe I can help.
