hi, here is my car and the dream..with an empty wallet
« on: August 01, 2007 - 03:58:28 PM »
hi my name is josh, I am 29, I bought this car from my buddy for $1100 about 7 years ago and have been workin on my wifes 68' firebird for too long (she wants a cuda now), so im going to get my car on the road again, well here it is, my plane jane 72' challenger (regesterd as a 71') 318 (big crack in valley) auto.(long gone) a/c, console, sport mirrors, petty blue that will one day be a 70' 440-6-pack/4-speed non a/c silver with black bumble bee stripe and ralleys, once im done you wont be able to tell it ever was a 72, unless you look at the fender tag :-)....why dont I just buy a 70' 440-6/4-speed?, $money$ duh. hey anybody want to sell me a 70' 440-6 for $1100...didnt think so, well ill be doing all of the work...well almost, I will not be welding, one of my 4 welder buddys will, I will be doing the paint engine interior, streightening trim pices, buffing...etc., my motto is if someone els can do it so can I, well anyways I've gathered most of the parts for the conversion...I cant believe chrysler changed absolutely everything between 70'-72' here is a small list that i have collected on 70' parts : dash, dash gauge end pices, console, 4-speed console plate/boot, front & rear seats, mirrors, 5-bow for headlinear (yes my car has a 5-bow roof) sun visors, rear view mirror, ralley gauges (got 2 70' sets now) ralley heater panel, heater box, heater de-frost, heater cables, 4-speed indicator, rear side-marker sheetmetal, sidemarkers, front fenders, grille, headlight bezels, bumpers & brackets, rear taillights, and sheetmetal, front valance, horns, fender brackets, 68' 440 hp block (out of a California Highway patrol car), bellhousing, ported and polished big valve 906 heads, 6-pack carbs, air cleaner ass'ly.,  3-speed wiper,  :blah: well im sure i forgot some stuff, ill be building it in years to come but for now i got a 78' motorhome 440 for $200 that runs ill be slapping it in with a np a833, the problem im having is the cast crank is externally balanced....so my solution is to take the weight off of the torq. converter and adding it to the flywheel, ive already got the pilot bearing to fit in the crank where the converter snout goes, i will be turning down the NP A-833 bearing retainer to fit the big block bell, i just need a radiator....

Welcome to the site!  It sounds like you'll have a very nice car once it's all finished.  Restorations can definitely drain your bank account, but it's all worth it in the end. :2thumbs:

 Hi, Josh!

Like the name, that's my son's name!  Like the car, same as my car!  Mines a '72 Rallye in TB3, Super Blue.

Looks like a fun project!

:clueless: Just curious though, why is your car registered as a '71?

You've got a ton of parts stashed!  Have fun!

Feel free to ask lotsa questions here!  Lotsa nice people with lotsa info!  :grinyes:
1972 Dodge Challenger Rallye 340, AT, Code TB3=Super Blue, SBD=8/17/1971.  Yes, a Rallye without the fender louvers from the factory because of the body side molding option.
