Just joined, and i am impressed with this site.
« on: August 03, 2007 - 09:55:36 PM »
I had no idea there were so many people out there that loved old mopars. Many years ago when i was just a lad, My two uncles had a 70 roadrunner and the other a Coronet 500. I decided then that i was going to get one myself someday. I finally found what i thought was a good deal. 73 Challenger, with a 318. Body is solid, engine runs well,BUT. Here it is, well i took the vinyl top off and was a little taken back. Rust clear through above the rear window and the front window. Dutchman panel completely shot also. I Am going to need some help with the roof. I am a pretty good mechanic and love to learn and not afraid to try something myself. In fact i want to do most of it myself. Is there any body in S.E. Washington(State) that might be willing to lend an ear to my plight. Anybodies help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the site, ChallengerCrazy!  Glad you found us. :2thumbs:  As for your question, there are plenty of well-educated bodymen and general do-it-yourself people here to give you a good idea as to go about fixing your roof rot.  One person I'd probably get in touch with is DMZ73 (Dan) for some awesome information on how to go about sheetmetal fabrication/installation.  Perhaps you could make a separate post in "The Body Shop" section of the site and monitor the results you receive through there.  (There's so many great sheetmetal guys here it's hard to give you all their screen names. :2thumbs:)

Hi Challengercrazy!  Welcome!

Any pics, we like pics here, no matter what shape/condition the car is in!

Roof skins....there was one a little while back ago but I think it's gone now.  I think moparclown had one didn't he?  I think someone else too.  Best find one locally.  I can't imagine what it costs to ship one of those babies!

If I'm not mistaken, all year Challengers use the same roof if that helps.

Lotsa nice people here with lotsa info!  Just ask!  :)

I am still trying to send pictures. I am having a tough time getting them to resize, so the site will stop rejecting them.

Easy way to resize your images is to use Irfanview. It is a small program and is free.

The areas around the front and rear glass are common rust areas. Usually they can be repaired easily in short sections at a time (so stressed areas don't pop out) with simple angled steel. But obviously you need something to weld to so if it is as bad as you suggest you will indeed need to find a good roof to swap over. Good luck with that. Dodge never painted under the vinyl tops so your best bet is to find a doner that came without one.

Welcome aboard. You have found a great site to be part of. I'm sure you will find all the info you need to make your project a success.

To resize pics go to the home page and click on tools or click on this link. Pictures are usally best at 800x600 http://www.cuda-challenger.com/html/tools.php

Welcome to the site.  When I bought my A pillars about 2 years ago, I think Dessert Valley Auto Parts had 1 or 2.

Let me try sending a couple pictures again. I do think i have plenty of good metal to weld to. Some of the window channel is rusted through also.

Welcome to here! That rust sucks, I am sure you will find a good donor roof here or someone will point you in the right direction. I do love that pistol grip shifter sticking out in that one pic

That pistol grip makes it all worth while!!!  :burnout:
