Steering Box help needed
« on: August 05, 2007 - 01:32:16 PM »
:banghead: :banghead:  I have been trying to remove my steering box.  The pin was jammed down in the coupler.  I could use some advise.  At this point I'm ready to just cut the column or box rod.  Please help.

You need a punch to do that. Sorry, I don't know the size. I had those "T" type of valve cover hold downs, and found the threaded end of one worked like a charm.  Believe me, I tried going at it with a screw driver and hammer, and that WON'T work.

Put some penetrating lubricant on it & let it sit a day, find a drift(I used a drill bit) that fits the outside diameter of the pin. With the steering column locked to hold steady hit the drift with hammer.....this worked for me.

If you cant get it with Bullit's drill bit trick, Go to Sears and buy a set of punches and a good hammer. That pin will come right out. I've even used a long steel rod from the hardware store to drive that pin out.

:iagree:
Mine was stuck in place and I had to get a punch and hammered it several times to make it come out.  Good Luck.  :2thumbs:

I had this same problem once and ended up removing the "dowel pin" that holds the "shoes" inside the coupling. Then I had to pull the steering column out from the inside of the car. When the column was free of the steering box I was able to take it out and work on the pin on my workbench. Guess I was paranoid of hammering too hard and maybe bending something. This isn't the easiest method but for some reason I remember having an easier time with the smaller dowel pin. Only problem is I can't remember if I hammered it down & out or up & out.

Thanks all ...... I've tried all other solutions except JayBee's solution.  This is why I have been beating my head against the wall.

It's been awhile since I had my colum out but doesn't the roll pin have a slight taper on it requiring it to be punched out in only one direction

:banghead: :banghead: :banghead:  Ok I have tried lubing the area of the pin for a week then tried the punch.  I also tried working at the coupling area but I couldn't slide the coupling off.  Can I cut the shaft of the steering box? :pullinghair: :pullinghair:

Maybe a little heat on the coupling itself, though you would more than likely have to rebuild it afterwards.

May be you can try to use a driller and drill it out from the coupler.
Did you use a sledge or something heavy as a support when you tryed to hammer it out

Found it!!! This is the tool I made years ago from 1/2" round stock and an angle grinder. It has worked like a champ 3 times so far. It is long enough to get a real good hit on that pin.

OK I will try one more time.  I'll go around to Lowes or HD for a piece of 1/2" round stock and grind it down.
