NEED HELP on VIN's numbers matching
« on: August 07, 2007 - 12:23:23 AM »
ok....i know the factory could be a sloppy place....but please give me your opinion's....

this is supposed to be a numbers matching Cuda....the VIN is 3B519116

on both the engine and transmission, it is all double stamped, and looks like someone had either made a mistake, and punched the correct numbers on, OR this was done by someone other then the factory....it's too obvious to be someone trying to cover up a VIN and make the car numbers matching...the 340, and torquflight look like they have been in there sine day one, complete with every original part etc, and tons of grease and dirt....I do own the car, and have for a long time, just never looked at the numbers.....could the factory stamps come out like this? ??? it's not a super rare car worth tons of money...just an average 340 Cuda......??? I also have the buildsheet

you can see the 20906 under BOTH engine and trans, and the correct ones are over in the same places...??

and the fact that the engine and transmission are the same numbers (before stamp) makes me think they may be original to the car....usually a trans or engine would be replaced at one time or another by itself....what is the possibility that a guy had to replace BOTH at once?

That is really wierd........ but possible.

Galen Govier mentioned a similar situation in an article a while back. If I remember right, he felt that the parts had been stamped, then a problem found with the assembly so they were not installed. After the problem was fixed they parts ended up re-stamed for another car at another plant.

I think the article was in Mopars Collectors Guide within the last 2-3 years if someone can find it?

Hopefully some other 1973 E body owners can post photos of their engine and tranny numbers as well so that we can compare the fonts used?

I bought the car through a fellow car dealer friend of mine, we have done several deals together in the past with quite a few cars, and he said he found it and got it from the original owners.....never had a bad deal with each other, but i really have to question this situation....

pics would be great...I had it on ebay this week, and ended up selling it to my brother! I'm glad it will still be around!! we may end up writing Galen about it anyway (which could take forever!) :grinyes:...the block IS stamped 1973 too....which makes me feel its correct...along with the vins being somewhat close together 19116 and 20906....about 1790 apart...what are the chances a guy would blow / remove BOTH the motor and transmission in 1973, then replace it with a matched pair with a VIN that is not far off from the original...??? (it could have been done years later too, so who knows- everything under the hood looks un-touched) either way it will be a cool car, and we will post the restoration on here this winter.. :working:

There's some good pics of the car on ebay still auction number
200137631934
it went up to $12,900 with two days to go still....

I'll do the best I can on some pics.   Is the cast date 73?  340?
