71 RT Challenger find
« on: August 07, 2007 - 11:35:31 AM »
I wanted to share with you guys a car that I found a few yours ago.  While I was surfing the net for some parts for a 71 convertible I am restoring I came across an ad for a 71 RT Challenger 383 for sale $2500.  I guess I was searching Google for a frame rail or something and this ad came up.  I sat there a second thinking this has to be gone or really rotted out.  I knew at least if the car was complete the parts were worth way more than $2500.  Heck a Rally dash is worth that much.  So I called the guy.  He told me he still had the car and starting asking me questions about myself and if I owned Mopars or what my plans might be for the challenger.  I came to the conclusion that he was questioning me because he really loved the car but needed to sell it and wanted to sell to someone that planned to restore it.  He told me he had dozen of calls from guys that he felt would part it out.  I guess I sounded motivated enough to build it so he sent me pictures.  I could hardly believe it.  He said he had bought it five years ago for $5000. He said the previous owner had blacked out the chrome, bondoed the roof and painted the RT stripes red.  He had not started it in three years.  He stopped driving it because the roof rotted thru and one frame rail broke.  It looked pretty solid and was complete.  I left that night to pick it up in Virginia.  A buddy that went with me could not believe it either he kept saying I stole the car.  I loaded it up so fast and got out of there.  I didn't want him to change his mind.  When I got home I charged the battery and primed the oil pump then started it up.  One day hopefully soon I will finish restoring it.  I have taken it apart and it needs a roof, quarters, trunk floor and a frame rail. Here are the pictures he sent me followed be a few I took.

Cool find!

I can't wait to see more.

Is it a real TX9 car with a red orange stripe?

I will get the numbers from the tag tonight.  I guess I assumed the stripe was supposed to be white.  The owner said it had a white vinyl roof too.  He said it was called a top hat addition.  Has anyone heard of that.  Also Hounds tooth seat covers.  I will decode it tonight.

Here are some pictures of my progress.  I am working on the frame and body of a 70 vert now.  Hope to start back on the Rt this Fall.

I built the garage in 2004.  I ran out of room in my basement and wanted a place to rebuild my 71 vert.  After I built the garage I found the 71 Rt and then the 70 vert.  You know after I built the garage my wife said it would have been a whole lot cheaper to just pay to have the car restored.  But what fun would that have been.  It is easier to work on cars now. I have about three project going on at once.  I do not do bodywork for a living.  I actually work on airplanes during the day and my real love mopars at night as a cool hobby.
