1970 Challenger Project - Happy to find this place
« on: August 07, 2007 - 04:10:41 PM »
First off, A#1 site.   :wow:
I can tell already that I'm going to like this place.

Background:
My first car was a Mopar Musclecar in the non-traditional sense.  Ex-cop car.  1980 St. Regis.  360 4bbl, dual exhaust, limited slip rear.  Sure it had 4 doors but considering what Detroit had to offer back then, it was a nice compromise for a kid.  Had I swapped in a set a headers it would have really screamed.

I've been a car-guy since I was a kid.  As a matter of fact, I boycotted Dukes after the 3rd season when I learned how many Chargers were destroyed in making the show.  At least now I can watch the reruns guilt-free.

Anyway, I have a unique situation.  Being several thousand miles away I can't work on my own car.  But I have befriended a local who is building a 1970 Challenger.  You gotta give the guys in Europe huge props for taking on projects like this.  We think we have difficulty finding parts and shops that know older cars, but this is a whole new ballgame.

Right now he is tackling the rust issue.  The car needs a lot more than was expected.  This is not my forte, but we are starting to plan for the engine and suspension work.

Have to admit, although I have worked on many makes, I have the least experience in Mopars.  Unfortunately all the "generic" magazines don't seem to give them their dues.  Seems like they cover everything but.  So I will probably ask some really basic questions specific to mopars from time to time.  I hope you guys will patience with me.

The nice thing about it is I don't have to spend my own money.  Sadly, it won't me mine   :(

Regardless I am excited.   I get a taste of home life, new experience, and the joy of wrenching.

Our goal is to keep it looking mostly stock, but improve the suspension and engine to make it fun both on country roads and the Autobahn.  It is a Challenger SE 383 2bbl with a non-original block and 4bbl engine.

Also, if any of you have experience dealing with the German TÜV please let me know.

Thanks!

Right now, Stuttgart area is home.  It would be fun to get it finished and take it on the Autobahn once.  But, it still has a a long way to go...

First order is to get rid of the cancer.  Trunk pan, both inner quarters and one outter quarter.  Unfortunately it just had a new vinyl roof installed (paid by owner) before the receiving the car.  I had a bad feeling, so off it came.  Yup, better we caught it now, as it would have only gotten much worse.  Plan is to build it once, and build it right.  It will be interesting to see what shape the engine is in (haven't opened it up yet).  If it looks like it needs a lot of work, we might go stroker.  My only concern is getting the exhaust to pass regulations.  He wants a historic plate (saves a ton of money) which may factor into how much we can modify.

Sorry but they both are mine. I have owned the 71 Challenger RT since 1989 and the 1970 Cuda I brought home in boxes all tore apart in 2000. Both cars were restored in a 2 car garage with the Challenger even having the outside painting down in the 2 car garage. I decided to paint the Cuda in a paint booth as I had went over board with the 5 year restoration on it and the restoration was all done by me except for the outside final clear coat.

Welcome,  We look forward to hearing about your progress.  Take pictures every step of the way.  If you don't you will be sorry later.  I have shut down everything several times just to go find my camera.  Like everyone has already said we are all here to help.  And in a short time you will be the one answering all the questions.  Thanks
