Are you using the vacuum advance?...if so disconnect it & see what the results are.

A thought from out of left field, but, have you ever replaced the filter sock on the pick up tube in the gas tank? I don't know how that would affect the erratic tach reading, but I could see it restricting fuel flow at high rpm if it is some what clogged.

But even @ no load, reeving the motor in neutral?

This is why the ignition system needs to be "scope" out, so the problem can start to be narrowed down.

You are not asking them to fix the problem, just start to find out what areas are good so you can look elsewhere.

If you don't have the right equipment to check it out, theres not a thing wrong with finding a shop to give you a hand.

Either that or just change every darn part until-bingo-you get it

Thats the wrong way to repair your car, anybody can do that.

:iagree: I didn't think about the filter sock, but many years ago I had a fuel filter that had been on since the car was built (I think) probably for close to ten years. It was almost completely clogged. Fuel could flow at idle and cruise, but when I'd nail it I'd get power for a couple of seconds, then it would fall off sharply from starvation until the fuel pump could catch up through the restriction, then I'd get power again. I found out by accident what was causing the problem when I got a fuel filter clearanced for a buck at the local Dodge dealer and once I put it on the problem went away.

I stand by my original statement on page 1 of this thread. If the tach is going nuts, it's electrical.   :2cents:

That narrows it to a half-million things.  :pullinghair:

I am using a vacuum advance distributor, but I do not have the vacuum connected.

:clueless:  Would leaving it unhooked cause a problem?

The gas tank, pickup tube, sock, and fuel lines were all replaced about two years ago when I put the motor in the car.   :2thumbs:

I have a 3/8" fuel line, with two see through filters, so I can tell that it is not clogged.   :2thumbs:

No. As long as the vacuum advance port in your carb is plugged.

I guess that is possible, but then I would not be able to see the problem as easliy.     :clueless:  If it was the tach, would it change the problem rpm (from 3000 to 4500) when I changed the distributor?   :dunno:

I with MEK its electrical....... my 499 had the tach all of a sudden start acting erratic and going bonkers.... It was the wire going into the alternator would wiggle off somehow and I would lose power etc.....then the tach would go bonkers.......

Check all the tach wires an see if something is grounding somewhere cause it is tied in with your ignition........  :2cents:
