Prowler wheels on Ebody?
« on: August 13, 2007 - 10:31:22 AM »
While I am STILL struggling with overtemp issues I am dreaming of the look I want for my car. Yesterday I missed a deal on 4 17" Torq-Trust II's. They were polished aluminum and even had rubber to boot for $150! The guy placed the ad and they were spoken for in 15 mins.  :'(

For that price (and if they would have fit) I was in. They were actually off of a 2000 Mustang. Has anyone seen an Ebody with Prowler wheels? The chromed, smooth rim version made by American Racing sure look slick. They are 20" in back and 17" in front. I am not too keen on that tall of a wheel in back although it would give it that G-ride look. More doable for me is probably two pair of the fronts. They are 17" x 8" with 5.5" backspacing. Probably still talking spring relocation huh? The center hub hole is 3", Ebods are smaller hub dia in both front disc and back drum?

Actually I did see a 71 cuda convert at a show recently that had prowler wheels on it.  It was yellow with black billboards and I did like the looks of it.  I think I have a pic somewhere but will have to get the film developed before I can post it.   :dunno:

This is interesting!  I'm always looking to see what other wheels fit on our cars, just in case a I see a cheap pair.  I'm still wondering if Infinity G35 coupe wheels will work.  Same bolt pattern.....  :dunno:

If the hub hole is indeed 3" than a hub centering spacer may be needed. I am up for that. The OEM version wheels were a painted silver metallic finish. I have seen some that had mild "bullets" in btween each spoke. Too much detail there, but the aftermarket ones do look slick. I like the G-machine look with the wide wheels and the slightly lowered body.

Can you post that pic when you get your roll developed?  Or if someone could photochop those wheels on a Cuda that would be cool. While I'm dreaming here, the 20"'s are 20" x 10" with a 6.25"BS. If the standard backspace on the Ebods is around 4.5", assume a 3" spring relocation kit do it?

The G-Force Cuda still sticks in my mind. I wonder what that car rides like? Who would know, it probably only gets trailered  :dunno:

That would require moving the tubs and part of the Longitudinals over a couple of inches or more.
It might be easier to just backhalf the car and build everything from scratch

Doh! - Maybe the 17x8's are more practical with the 5.5 BS?

Here's I something I did in MS Paint.  The wheels look good, IMO.

probably does get trailered, but it seems like the owner enjoys it!

another thing about 17" rims, is that once you get into the 5.5"-5.7" backspacing (+25 to +30 offset) you'll actually run into problems with the upper ball joint!

am still interested in the 17" though. What is the required backspace on a front disc brake car? Maybe I could squeak by using thin spacers?

Not sure of the offsets and the differnce in them, but Viper wheels are a whole lot easier to find used than Prowler wheels. In the same vein, you might be able to swap the rear housing for a C body unit to add around 4" of width to it to help put the wheels further out towards the wheel lip to accomodate some of the positive offset on those modern wheels. Of course up front would require something considerably different than stock to get the offset right.  Coys makes billet wheel spacers that bolt onto you stock hub and then have new studs the screw into the spacer for the large widths these woudl require. Haven't a clue about price though.

Yeah, I think the rear 20's are out of the question, but the 17" might work all the way around. Still as you describe there will be fitment issues with the 8" wide rim and 5.5 BS. Its easy to Photoshop a concept together but quite another to make a wheel work within the constraints of the wheelwell, hub fitment and driveability.  I also wanted to lower the car slightly and that will probably add to the issues. I need to get my hands on a pair and see if it's do-able.

The other day I parked next to a 70 sport satellite.Lime green with Prowler 20's on the back and some 18" foose jobs up front(very similar pattern)    He was from the east coast. I got his card.  The 20's looked awsome!  He said there were no mods.  Wish I had a pic  I think the B's have more room.   I just put 17's all around, lots o' room.
