Street 440 - Manifold Choice
« on: August 14, 2007 - 01:53:34 PM »
I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I could not find it while searching...

I am building a street 440 for the Challenger, and I am looking at 3 intake manifolds:
- Edelbrock Performer
- Edelbrock Performer RPM
- Mopar P4529118 (replacement for the Eddy CH4B - Looks like the stock manifold).  Picture attached below...

I am curious to know your feedback about these manifolds.  I am leaning toward the RPM, if it will fit under the Challenger's power bulge ('twin scoop', 'rallye') hood.  I like the look of that Mopar manifold, but I don't know anyone who has used it!  The car will be a street cruiser, with a 3.23 Sure-Grip rear and a 2400 stall.

I am also up in the air about carb selection, but I know that's another can of worms, since I'm not a Holley fan...   ;)

Thanks in advance for your input!

-Tom

Engine Details:
446 CID
SpeedPro Hypereutectic pistons
452 heads - comp valve job, 2.14/1.81 valves
Custom Best Machine cam (~0.500" lift)
Compression Ratio: 9.3:1
727 automatic

Well you done have it listed but I believe and many others here will probably tell you the Holley Street Dominator.... Low rise single plane with power good to 6000 rpm....

Thanks for the quick response.  Good point...I see the Holley SD mentioned over at moparts quite a bit.

But I am really just interested in feedback about these 3 dual-plane manifolds.

Thanks,
-Tom

That's what I have.  The experts have told me to avoid your first two options there. I can't speak for the Mopar intake.

I've had the performer RPM and the CH4B, both are good for what they are intended for.

The CH4B I had on my 440 when it was stock(ish), "RV" type crane cam with a carter 625, ran fine, I think I gave it to someone since it wouldn't bring any money.
The RPM I had on the 440 with the matching cam and a holley 800, ran fine also, pulled to 6500 no problem and fit under the stock (i.e. flat) barracuda hood with a drop base air cleaner and a 3 inch filter. 12.58@109 in the 1/4 with less compression and head work (by a long shot) than you.

70 Cuda, 7.0L Gen-III Hemi, Viper T56 w/9310 gearset, 3.91's, Megasquirt MS3x v3.57, Innovate wideband, Firm Feel upper arms, torsion bars, springs and strut rods, QA1 DA shocks. I did everything on this car except the fancy paint stuff and I drive it...and I can't seem to stop messing with it....

ntstlgl1970:  That is great feedback.  Glad to hear that the RPM fit, since that is what I'm leaning toward.

At the Mopar Nats swap meet this week, I saw 3 of the CH4B, and the lowest price I saw was $90!

Thanks,
-Tom

If you have a bulge hood, I would think anything would fit. You are open game here.  :grinyes:

And what is the normal red line for a 440?  I have heard there are way to be able to pull more RPM's but no one ever told me how???

the Performer will lose power over a stock intake Stay away
the Mopar intake is an alum stock intake , which is decent
the RPM is by far the best of the 3
the SD would be my choice

I'll chime in since I have some experience.   I USED to run the Eddie Performer RPM intake.  I THOUGHT it was the cats meow.  Problem 1 I had was that it wouldn't clear a flat hood for a Chally.  Chryco turned me onto the Holley Street Dominator last year at Carlisle which I found in the swap area for $75. I slapped that baby on when I got home and HOLY SH!T, it truely was night and day.  Pulling power throughout the RPM range and tire frying action at every light, intentional or not.
In true redneck fashion I turned my Eddy Performer into a planter.  :roflsmiley:
