Safety switch bypass on auto trans?
« on: August 15, 2007 - 10:47:44 AM »
Ok, now that I got my car running again, I went to the gas station to fill it up.  Wouldn't you know it when I went to start it up at the station it wouldn't start.  I knew immediatley what the problem would be and I was right, the 3 plug connector came off the safety switch on the  auto tranny.
After pushing the car out of the way and getting a nice burn from the exhaust, I got it hooked back up and I was on my way.
Well it must have come off again because the car wouldn't start later that day.

So my question is this, how can I bypass this thing so I don't look like a fool fumbling under the car and burning my hand?  I think the rubber is hardened and the plugs worn out so it isn't fitting right anymore.  I tried to secure it with some silicon but that didn't last too long.  It has 3 little recepticals, can I jumper between 2 to bypass?  Any ideas would be great!

(I do realize that this will defeat the purpose of a safety switch and am well aware of the hazards  :nono:)

You can bypass it by running a jumper wire from one of hte contacts on the starter relay to the center terminal on the switch. Before you do that though, you might look inside the plug and see if you can pry the contacts tighter together. This will assist them in grabbing the poles on the trans switch and aid in retention.

How'd I know someone would say that, I'll have to check out their site.  Still need to do something until a new one comes in.

the yellow wire is power , the brown is ground , just make a jumper from the terminal the brown wire is on to ground somewhere close

If all that happens is a connection to ground, why is there 3 wires?  Just trying to understand the engineering behind the concept.
1 Wire to ground
2 other wires to send power back or complete the circuit?

Center wire is ground for the relay, outside wires are for back up lights.

Thanks for the info.  I did forget completely about the reverse lights.  I tried to crimp teh connector some more for better biting ability and then used some silicon to adhere it on the connector.  It makes a slight click and seems to stay on.  I have to order a new engine harness so I will include this item on the list.  Thanks for the input  :woohoo:

Mine used to fall off too. Like you, I crimped the female terminals inside the plug using a jewellers screwdriver AND sanded/filed some material off the front off the plug to make it push on farther onto the switch.

One other little trick is to take wire cutters and cut a slit on the outer edge of the plug in. When the rubber gets hard,it doesn't expand and slide over the switch, when you cut it,it expands and slips down over the switch like it used to .
