1972 Dodge Challenger original 318 currently has 440 AT 727 bored 30 over with TRW dome piston, rods , bearings, rings, Torker 440 Intake with New Holley Street avenger carb, TTI headers 1 7/8, Magnaflow 3 inch stainless exhaust with polished tips,  Front end has all new bushings, ball joints etc. Car was sandblasted; I have new quarters and trunk extension. Car needs painted. I have all sheet metal for body man. The instrument cluster has been redone by auto instruments with new white face gauges. Interior is new (carpet, headliner, and new custom seats to match paint scheme I had planned on painting it). It has new Vintage air A/C kit installed. Also has aftermarket sway bar ready to be installed. Engine is painted and looks good. Car was manual brakes it now has power brakes. All new brake lines and fuel lines from Fine Lines along with new gas tank and sending unit. All new weather-stripping and window whiskers Also has new trunk trim. Underneath of car has been coated with Por 15. All floor pans and trunk look good it has new distributor and new plug wires and mopar performance valve covers. The car is currently in primer. If interested I can send pics asking…. 14500 OBO I have over 17000 in it but don’t have patience to deal with it and tuning issues. I thought carb would be easier to deal with than EFI but I was sadly mistaken So I guess I am going to let this go
All the crap work is done now it just needs someone that knows how to tune it to fool with it !!
I have original build sheet!!

All right yall I am gonna keep it .... I got some help with the things i didnt know jack $$$$ about and i am ready to continue to the downfall of my bank account.......... I keep ya posted on progress

I can understand getting ticked off and losing interest in your car, trust me there.   :grinyes: Tell us about your carb problems, and maybe we can talk you thru it. What size did you go with, the 770, or 870?

it is a 770 street avenger And finally tonight the car finally idled for the first time since i have owned. I could actually tell that it was real close to where is is supposed to idle at....However after it would idle for a minute ro so then it would shut off..... One of my brothers firends came up to the garage and adjusted the timing he said it was way out of whack  now the toal timing is at 32.... I did a vacuum check on it this evening and at idle it only has 10-12 inches of vacuum...... so another guy told me if it did not have 16-20 inches then i need to put a different cam in it or i would have to run a vacuum booster  and most likely a stall converter and that i would not be happy with it. Since i want a driver for the street  i plan on backing the cam down to a 337A1 from lunati ( i called the guys at lunati and talked to them about a couple of cams Someone of the forum said to go with 60303 but he said it was  just as potent as the cam i have now  (486/504 lift 234/244 duration at 50)he said i would be more interested in the 485 lift and 220 duration at 50  i shouldnt have detonation issues or other problems (vacuum or stall) ... everyone on the forum seems to think the lunati cams are the best .... so i am going with them... I am lookin for a cam that i wont need a stall or vacuum booster..... This si the first old car i have ever owned so the whole carburetor thing is brand new to me. the problem of it idleing for a minute or so has me torn between it not getting enough fuel ( possibly bad fuel pump) or the float in the carb are not set right?? or the air fuel screws are not set right ??? and i am not 100 percent sure that any of that is correct? maybe it is the timing but the 32 falls in the window of timing that i have got from other people  so...... wheni idling and you pull the throttle real quick it has  a hiccup in it them it catches up  which I dont have the foggiest as to what that might be .... Like i was saying the current plan is new cam and lifter .. new fuel pump... and also i plan on gettin the holley SD intake (currently it has a torker 440 ) and everyone said those holley SD are the way to go so hopefully  after those changes things will be alil better. Today was a big day for the car since it finally did idle today... so i cant be too mad  cuz today wa sa big step..... however i found out that i am gonna need to spend a good bit to get it ot where i can enjoy it. SO here is where i am If you have any advice  I am definitly open to suggestions or offers....... thanks

Two things that come to mind here are the idle mixer screws might need adjusted, or you might have a vacuum leak somewhere, like air getting sucked in under the carb.

so if i sprayed a carb cleaner around the base of the carb that would tell me about a vacuum leak  correct?? and also how do you go about adjusting those idle mix screws cuz they have been fooled with enough now that i have no clue as to thwere they are set or even if they are even?? they should be set evenly right?? thanks MEK

I really don't think a vacuum leak would show up until you put the car into gear, but your idea about spraying carb cleaner around the base is a good one. First off, I wonder if you idle speed is set high enough for your car to idle? Then it's on to the idle mixture screws. If turned too far in, the mixture becomes too lean, and the car won't idle. If you want to, turn them all the way in, then back off one complete turn, so you know they are all even.

Once the car is in gear the idle drops to almost nothin then it stalls.... SO i would have to baby the throttle when it is in gear but will this give an accurate  vacuum reading in order to check for a leak?? What  is the easiest way to check for vacuum leak  when car is in gear??

I wonder what power valve is in your carb. You have to check vaccum when it's trying to idle in gear.  I don't know your cam size but in neutral it should idle even at 1500 rpms , if your cam/crank timing is set at specs.

32 total is ok for basic testing.  plug vaccum to distributor, set main idle set screw to just about zero with breather off, screw in idle mixture screws then out about 3/4 to 1 turn each. car in neutral and chocked tires with emergency brake on. use a starter remote to get engine running, make sure any vaccum line is plugged. Make sure you have the right pcv valve. Unplug the vaccum from the brake booster and seal it off. when engine is running (even if keeping it running by hand, hold your other hand over the throat of the carb and see if it idles up at all. This is like a choke. You can use a shop rag also. The car should idle at some type of rpm. If not, you may have a bad carb not tuned to your system, or the tiiming chain is out of sink. if you can get the thing to idle in gear, you need to pull a vacuum then to see what range power valve/valves you need. if it's at 4 you need a 3 if it's at 3 you need a 2.5 if it's at 6 you need a 4.5 in other words a bit lower then the vacuum reading you have. If the car has backfired in previous attemps, you may have caused the power valve to go bad. If so, it will not idle right. This is just basic steps I'd check first before changing out your cam. Another known good carb to try out would help to diagnose as well. A leaking intake valve will also cause a bad idle, but you should be able hear it in the carb. A bad intake gasket would also draw air from inside the engine and would not show up spraying around the extrernal areas checking for leaks.  This is just a few ideas I am saying for your tuning help.

Al,

  The power valve on these carbs is rated at 6.5, also it has power valve blow out protection.

Since the car will idle in park, I would be leaning towards a vacuum leak here.

how much vacuum should i have when the car is in gear tryin to idle?? i think i can get brother to feather the throttle while do the test... i checked on my carb and it does have the power valve protection or whatever it si to keep them from blowing out. how would i know if the intake or gaskets is leaking?? they are brand new the ones we took off didnt show any signs of leaking. and we installed these the same as the other ones so i would like to think the new intake gaskets are not leaking??? but i dont knwo

Yeah, I'd thought about that afterwards. even a 6.5 might be too big for a big cam

Tell ya what Mike, you and ufella bring the car over to my shop and we will just dive into it and get it going :bigsmile: I get very lonesome for company here on my dead end road out in the country. I dont let neighbors or local friends come around since I am always gone off working. But cc.c members would be a big plus. All my labor would be free to help members. :2thumbs:
