engine runing very poorly
« on: August 16, 2007 - 11:56:07 PM »
got a few videos. latley the car has a some bad days. so I installed a msd 6al, accell 300+ wires and platinum plugs car started sounded pretty good for a bit, then again went down hill... had it running for several minutes the engine started to drop to about 500rpms for about 1seconds the idled back up, it did this a few times, the motor reved decent but got a little pop through the car and exhaust.. I shut the car off went to start it a few hours later I

sorry about that hit the enter key!!!!!
as I was saying, later I tried to start it and I had to lay on the gas to get it started and stay on it to keep it running,  this has to be ignition I am thinking. for it to come and go.. I have 2 videos 1 is the car  running and the other is the play in the distributer rotor..  I am in the process with my dad of stripping the car for repaint, I dont want to keep dropping money into this, because it's making me poor real fast..

sounds like the carb is flooding internally & fouling the plugs

Anytime you have to use the pedal to start a car or keeep it running, it normally is linked to carb problems and not ignition.  The problem with carb problems is figuring what part is wrong.

PVC leak
Power Brake leak (if equipped)
Poor carb to intake seal
Poor Intake to head seal
Improper float adjustment
Blown Power valve
Bad (plugged/dirty) idle circuit
Worn bushings on throttle shaft
Improper jetting

That's all that comes to mind right now.  I do feel your pain.

I couldn't upload the video file of the engine running, it was to big.. I'll recheck the the brake booster line.. these carbs have less than 1500 miles on them bought them new, would an intake manifold make it pop through then carb and backfire through the exhaust??? my next step will be to change the intake manifold gasket...

do I need to drain the antifreeze to change the intake manifold gasket?
here is the beginning process of my car.

Iginition timing can do that, perhaps the inital timing is to advanced?  However if you have internal flooding like Chryco suggests, the added fuel will do that to.  Did you get a chance to look at the plugs, are they all dark and oily?

the plugs were black, i tried in the past to change the timing but the car would start and runs best at it's original location ,what the previous owner had it at.. but I believe they were black do to running on 7 cylinders, wire 1 wire got toasted on the headers. soon as I changed it the car could acually idle, before it would start and stall.. but I changing the gaskets (intake) the vacume would rise to 10 drop to 5 jump back up.  this happened last year as well when I installed the gaskets.. so I first do that, i just ordered them.. I have just the metal valley pan on there no other type of gasket. so I ordered felpro gaskets that the sales man says get sandwiched in between the  metal gasket the its between the ports..

you could order the 1215 intake gasket , it blocks the heat crossover & comes with the sde gaskets as well , usually you can only use 2 side gaskets between the pan & heads , using 4 you will not get the intake to bolt on

I am not sure of the part numbers I ordered. pretty much told the m what I needed and they suggested the gaskets as well, if I sandwich the metal pan between the gaskets as long as the bolts are long enough is that ok?? what do most members do when they replace theres?

whenever you take of the manifolds bolts look in the holes and see how well the holes line up with the heads... when i had my 906's they were shaved a little and threw off manifold alignment so I had to have the sides of the intake manifold flanges shaved down to make them lined up  with the heads ....
