Ok just got back from a little cruise.  Had a cop stop me and ask about the car, then he said I won't even joke about having a go, I'll lose, I was thinking that's right  :roflsmiley:

Cops are always the same when they pull over a fast looking car  :smilielol:.  It's always "it's a good thing you didn't run because I have in this Crown Vic a V8 with aluminum heads.....".

Look buddy, I wouldn't dream of trying to outrun any Police Officers on the public streets but if you and a couple of friends would like to meet me over at Firebird raceway next friday evening I would be glad to race your five thousand pound smallblock cruiser in my 455 HO GTO that last I checked ran mid twelves @ 112 mph before I bought my slicks...
(sorry, I had a flashback there)

Anyway, The regulator bypass is a good idea but whatever it is your just running out of fuel the moment the bowls empty out. (obviously)  If the regulator thing doesn't work disconnect the pump and run some compressed air down the lines and double check the tank for clogs and the line for kinks.  (sometimes rubber lines kink under acceleration)

I would be looking at using a Mallory Gearotor design pump instead , Holley Pumps are unreliable

IS the flow rate of the pump suitable for your motor?

That's what I was thinking.  :grinyes: You need a hi-volume pump. As Chryco suggested, Mallory makes one that is as quiet as a mouse. Despite the descriptrion, you need a fuel pressure regulator, because mine was pumping more than 7PSI.  :eek7:

Neil, Mike and Jery you may be on to something.  Before I order a new pump I started thinking about restrictions.

I took the fuel filter off and checked the insides, it was clean.  I did realize however that I have some rubber hose, one doing a "s" turn and another doing a 90* turn.  Both of these hoses are on the suction side of the pump and they both seem extremely flexible.  I'm thinking that under pressure and demanding fuel the pump is pumping but it is also sucking or pinching the rubber hose closed (I can easily squeeze the hose closed with hardly no effort).  I am replacing those with 3/8 hard line and will only use a straight rubber connection then I'll see what happens.
I don't want to buy a new pump and still have a problem.  If I can get a decent reading after the changes, then I'll be more than happy to buy that pump Mike linked too.  A quieter more reliable pump is always a good thing
I won't get a chance to do anything until late tonight or tomorrow morning before work.  I'll post up then.

It sounds like you are on the right track. All rubber hoses need replacing eventually. It doesn't sound good if they are too flexible.

For those that gave input and watched this thread I would like to report back to you.  Too many times a thread goes without completion and sometimes people wonder what happened?

Anyway, my problem is FIXED!  :woo:  It turns out that the rubber fuel line on teh suction side of the pump was collapsing and restricting fuel flow.  What I had before was one rubber line doing a "J" turn (not a sharp 90) and another section did a half "S".  At idle the carb wouldn't pull enough fuel for use so the pressure could build up, but when under load demanding fuel, the pressure would drop due to the pinched line.
Now as soon as the pump turns on the gauge hits 6 psi (before it slowly would climb up) and then under full acceleration the gauge stays at 6-7 psi.

I'm very grateful for those that provided input and guidance.  Thanks  :2thumbs:
