Synthetic oil
« on: August 17, 2007 - 05:01:49 PM »
I never used synthetic oil until 1996 when I started using mobil 1 in my nissan pathfinder.  Ever since I started using it she started to tic like a clock. Later i lost a timing belt and it was history.    I vowed never to use synthetic oil again! Now It's 2007,they remove the zinc from the oils...I read up on the alternatives.  So i decide to try Royal purple 10w30.  I didn't get 10 blocks and she starts ticking like a clock!  7+ bucks a Qt!  I'll have to drain it and get some Rotella and a zinc addative.       I know lots of people use RP stuff. It's so thin. Like water. Anyone using RP or synthetics have any problems?  Any other suggestions? :pullinghair:

What weight oil are you using? I hope 10W-30, or 10W40. As far as I know Royal Purple still has the zinc additives in it. Shell Rotella has changed it's formula now, so that won't help you. I currently use Amsoil 10W-40. Make sure it has the CI-4 rating to know it has zinc. I just wonder if you don't have other issues if you are hearing things from the engine?    :dunno:

I haven't used it in any of my classics yet. I did switch over my explorer and went with it for several years before it was wrecked. Never had any engine oil related issues. I'll probably switch my suburban over at its next change.

I don't know what to tell you. I have read the hell out of some oil tech articles. My choice is going to be a CI-4+ API rated oil with the STP or Hughes Engines oil additive when I get the blown stroker done. I have a 78,000 mile 1973 Dodge P/U that I use Rotella in (no problems), the wifes VW Jetta Diesel gets Mobil 1 TDT (Turbo Diesel Truck) CI-4 synthetic, it ticks but it's supposed to.

I agree with you about the CI-4 rating. I think there might be another issue here though. Maybe he is using 5W-30 or something? You should NOT hear ticking... unless you have a slant-six, then you get a sorta ticking.   :lol2:

Yeah, he said he's using RP 10-30. Try a 40 weight.

I've been using Royal Purple now for a couple years as well as Mobil 1 prior to that in my 340. Not only does it not use oil, It  does not make any noise or ticking. I agree with the above comment that there is something already wrong and not the oil.

I have been using Mobil 1 5w-30 in my 4.7L Dakota for the last 40,000 miles (83,000 total) without a problem.

I have been running Redline 10W30 in my Challenger (360) for about 1000 miles without a problem.  I broke it in with Castrol 10w30 (3000 miles) before using the synthetic.  No problems yet.

Just remember that Rotella is 15w-40, that is the thick stuff like you said.  If you go with synthetic, I would go with something a lot thicker than 10w-30, maybe 10w-40 or higher, because the bearings are use to something thicker.

I don't know if it was just me or what.  :screwy:  She's got some miles on her.The guy who built it said he dropped a lifter at some time. this would have been atleast 6 yrs. ago.  It only ticks right after start up. I might have been over-reacting...just didn't sound right.                  What can I do ?

It sounds like a lifter leaking down. I would change them. You could just keep an eye on it as long as it pumps up there should'nt be much danger. This prob. is common with many G M 350.

All oils are supposed to lose the zink IIRC. Synthetics SHOULD be good enough at the job. But I switched recently to Valvoline Racing straight 30wt. They advertise the zink package, and I use the Comp Cams additive. Although I may go with Hughes later.
