Shorty wires for 5.7 Hemi
« on: August 19, 2007 - 02:31:32 PM »
The way these look, the wire just loops around from the coil next to it.  If this is true, why cant I just take the factory wires and cut them down?  Wouldnt that work?   ???

Yep. Don't know how reuseable the ends are as far as the metal parts. Pull a boot off and take a look and see how they are attached. Something else people are doing is converting to 6.1 valve covers and using the dual coils with no plug wires. Not real expensive and looks even better with no plug wires.

I'm not sure how you would cut them down.  :clueless:  You would have to re-crimp one end of them after the cut. If the brass connection to the spark plug was available after-market, then I guess you could do it.  :dunno:

I can buy the ends, I have seen them before.  I think I have a couple of old sets of wires laying around too.  How come a person cant just throw that stuff?

Just some de-soldering and re-soldering should do the trick.

I kinda like the look of the wires there.  I may just end up getting the "cut your own" wires in orange.  Nah, I'm too cheap.  I'll make my own with what I got.   :grinyes:  Thanks guys.

Steve,

Seriously, for those of us that have normal non-Hemi engines  :poopoke:  The universal spark plug wires, you cut then crimp a brass connector onto the spark plug end. Then slide on the boot. Is it different with a Hemi engine?   :clueless:

Even if the into-the-valve-cover plug end was different, the distributor end looks like a normal L boot.

Just get some new brass connectors, cut the long wires and re-crimp shorter.

Should be lookin at a nice, low resistance level on three inch wires. :-)

Mike, nope, not any different.  I see they have come a long ways in spark plug wires, lol.  I'm used to an aluminum core, in which case I always solder the ends on.  So young but stuck in the old school is me, lol.   :bricks1:

I did two of them tonight, they dont look too bad.

Where can I find info on swapping the 5.7 valve cover to a 6.1 valve cover as mentioned?
