Finally gonna watch Vanishing Point....
« on: August 19, 2007 - 08:14:09 PM »
I know, I know....  I've never seen vanishing point, and our local hastings finally got a copy in for sale, so I broke down and bought it.  It has both U.S. and UK versions on it.  Whats the difference between the two?  It shows the U.S. is 98 minutes long and the UK is 105.  We are gonna sit down and watch it in just a few minutes, but I won't have time for both versions tonight.  Next I'll have to find Dirty Mary Crazy Larry!  :burnout:

Once upon a time, I was a self-proclaimed VP expert (this from PAYING to SEE the movie in theaters over 50 times because there was no such thing as a VCR at the time).  Anyway, I believe the UK version contains a scene starring Charlotte Rampling that was deleted from the US version.

Over the years, I learned even more, but must now defer to my VP colleagues.

Anyway, enjoy the flick !

I just saw it a couple of months ago, and my wife and I hated it.  Made no sense whatsoever.  My favorite part was the naked chick on the little motorcycle propositioning the dude who turned her down.  Dumbass...

Sorry, I realize I've never used ANY of the mind-altering chemicals that probably permitted a film like this to be dreamt up, but I flat-out didn't get it!

Which one are you watching? The old one from the 70's or the newer remake for Fox T.V.? I have seen them both. The old one has some real awesome driving, but it was hard to watch. Didn't have much of a plot or something. I Liked the newer one better. The best line in the whole movie is "If you are going to catch a mopar, you have to do it with a mopar". Or something to that affect.

I've got this movie.  I like it.  Lots of drag racing and street racing.  Not much dialog at all though.  Which, in a way is a good thing, because it gets in the way of the cars.   The old vanishing point is pretty good too.
The difference in the versions is that the UK version has some chick he picks up the night before he decides to collide with the catipillars.  The new vanishing point is better to me because of the 68 Charger(Bullitt) meets 70 Challenger(Vanishing point).

You have to view it in the context of the era; Vietnam, sex, drugs, rock and roll, earth mothers, jesus freaks, travelling carnivals, anti-establishmentarinism, fast cars, anti-hero, rebellion, the "man" keepin ya down, far out, tune in-drop out, anything is possible, and freaky, MAN!

Otherwise, it is just a patch work film of weird scenes.

It has both U.S. and UK versions on it.  Whats the difference between the two?  It shows the U.S. is 98 minutes long and the UK is 105.

The UK version has a long sequence with Charlotte Rampling which was cut from the US version.  If you like the existentialism of the movie as a whole you'll love the cut sequence, and if you don't I'd stick with the US version.

Note to 73 Barracuda,  I saw all of  "Rebel Without a Cause"  the first time about 15 years ago. The movie came up during a discusion at work and I said how stupid it was.  An older guy said if I had seen it when I was 16 when the movie first came out, I would have not thought that.  The same goes for VP 1, I saw it when I was 13 the day it opened at our local movie theater.........we thought it was great.  But compared to modern day movies......very lame.  Remember, these were B rated movies that were made hoping to make a few bucks at the drive in theaters on Friday, Saturday nites. Who knew it would become one of the cult classics.........
Same goes for the first  "Gone in Sixty Seconds.  It was fantastic when I saw it the first time......saw it again last year , what a let down.

I enjoyed it far as the Challenger aspect of course, but like previously said...  I too haven't had the history of the mind altering drugs required, and it was definately  :eek7: as far as plot, ect.  I did take in consideration of when it was made and such.  I'm gonna have to try the second one now.  I think hastings has it to rent so I won't have to buy it this time.  :roflsmiley: My wife hated it, so she might not watch the next one with me!  I know she won't sit through the UK version...  :smilielol:

I think your wife will like the new version. But make sure she has some Puffs. :crying:  I bought it for a friend of mine for his birthday. His wife always falls asleep watching movies with him. She loved the movie. :2thumbs: But said thanks for telling me I would cry. Awesome movie. :2thumbs: "It takes a Mopar to catch a Mopar " :burnout:
