Looks like a repop from datatags, I think LA tags have a skinnier font, maybe Alaskan TA can weigh in on this...

Yep, thats a repop tag, seller admits as much. Several tell-tale signs on that one.

BTW, the question posted on that auction talks about that tag being "illegal"  Well, fender tags are not meant to be a means of establishing a car's VIN and identity. The dash pad plate, drivetrain and body stampings do that.  The door decal is not a part of the car's means of ID either. That decal is just to certify that the car complies with all federal safety standards on the date of it's manufacture.

The fender tag was just a means of Id'ing what body options/mods the body shell needed as it rolled down the body line.

Ok but why do the emissions station folks always check the door when they are identifying
the car?

Because it gives them the month the car was built? I'm pretty sure they dont know how to read a VIN to determine year/month of build. I guess you'd have to ask them why.

If that decal is missing, you can still get your car titled here in PA. That decal has nothing to do with the verifying the car's ID. You can get one made up without any verification of the car's VIN since it's not considered a "VIN" tag/decal/plate by federal law.

LA did use two seperate fender tag fonts in 1970, maybe other years as well?
