499 StRoKer Oil preference

My 499 has on 390 miles on it only and I am running castrol 5w 30.... should I put in something else after a certain mileage??? seems to be a interesting topic lately..... dont want my motor going bad for when I race cuda guy... :burnout:

I'm surprised you are using 5W-30. I would never think to go that thin in my car.  :lol:

At normal operating temps (210F) the viscosity of 5W30 is the same as 10W30.  The first number (5) only applies to low temp properties ie it acts like 5 weight when it is minus 20F.

I run royal purple 10 w in my race engine 499, and in my other 499's that are under 800 hp I have always run penzoil straight 30 weight. But it is z7 high sulfer I think it's called and getting very hard to find. Never had a failure, but street use I changed it every 300 hard miles and track use I changed it every 20 passes. But it never failed under extreme conditions. On our big 3500 hp blown injected engines in the demon and draggster my partner and I bought/built and he runs, we use 3 weight royal purple for less drag. I believe royal has a zero weight also. I forget the weight we use in the rear ends but it's less than 10w too.

in very high hp motors you need high viscosity to provide full film lubrication during very high loads.  I heard (maybe incorrectly) that the nitro engines were running 70W???  If the oil is too viscous you'll have trouble getting it where it needs to go especially when the engine is cold.

The weights are just the opposite. At cold temps, the oil is thicker (40wt) and as the oil temp comes up, it gets thinner (5wt). I too am surprised at using a 5wt oil for anything more than a low rpm grocery car. It flat out isnt enough IMO. My neon runs 15/40...lol. My good stuff now gets Valvoline VR-1 straight 30. There is no SM rated oil that has enough zink in it to work well with flat tappet cams. And that change was only a few months ago.

other way around. 40 is thicker. Cold is thicker. You used to run thin in winter, and thick in summer. So you may see "40W for better protection when temps are hot". It's the air temps that get hot. The oil gets thin when it gets hot. That's why you always see oil pressure read hot. Thinner=less protection.

well you guys got me talked into an oil change...lol this will be the 5th oil change in 400 miles...lol  :burnout: I guess that means I change my oil every 80 miles............gotta keep it fresh for my kills....... :burnout:
