Power Steer pulley misalignment - now even more stumped..
« on: August 26, 2007 - 07:43:28 AM »
After a bit of mucking around it looks like the crank, water and alternator pulleys all line up but..

the power steer pulley is way off and I assumed that being factory pump and brackets it would just line up but even with considerable spacing it still is about half a pulley thickness out.  I could use a longer bolt and space the front out further and even space the pump forward on the rear bracket but it is all getting a bit dodgey.  Have included the pic so would appreciate some suggestions.  Thanks.

Just thought of something - I had the pump serviced, is it possible the pulley was put back on backwards?

looks like that is the keyed, slide-on type. There also is a press-on style that might have been a possible solution for you.

On the BB, does the PS run off the fwd crank groove by itself?

thats not even close, it should line up with the outer groove on the crank pulley. my guess is you have nonmatched pullies

flipping it around them might correct it but it looks like the bell on it is already correct  :dunno:

I had the same misalignment issue on my 440 sixpack. Don't know why or how it got like that, but the way we fixed it was to fabricate our own bushings from some pipe that my buddy had laying around his shop so that we were able to get the power steering pump to line up with the pulleys. Yeah, it doesn't look original, but at least everything lines up like it should.

Thinking about flipping the pulley (if possible due key and if not tapered?) which will make up a large part of the error and then use a small amount of spacing.  If this doesn't work then tube spacers might be the go.

I dont believe its a tapered shaft, the billet pulley I got from March would go on my pump either way. There was a noticeable offset to it.

So I flipped the pulley and the alignment is worse, just in the other direction. :pullinghair:  Pulley is also a few degrees off straight with the other pulleys which I had thought was due to the spacing  :faint:

But this isn't the end of my problems - bought some belts today and a test fit shows that the water/crank/alt belt will foul on both of the upper alternator mount bolts, and the steer belt will most likely rub on the water pump pulley. :banghead:

If I was to space both the water pump and crank pulleys to line up with the outer alternator pulley slot, it might fix this and maybe even line up with the steer pulley (now I'm dreaming), but spacing can't be good and the problems might just transfer somewhere else (fan clearance?).  Starting with a bare block and not having a complete set of parts off the same engine is really starting to be no end of trouble.  Anyone have a solution? - all new pulleys and brackets??  Is this even the right power steer pump?

Is your harmonic balance on all the way? Although it doesn't remedy the bolt fouling issue, from the first pic it looks like it improves your PS alignment and possibly your WP to crank alignment.

I assume the balancer is Ok as I had an engine shop put this together.  Crank wear meant that it had to be knurled to press on the balance but if anything, I need the balance to be a bit proud for clearance.  What level of spacing do I need between belts and engine hardware - do they normally run very close?

I would think you should clear any bolts unless they have a large profile head. If you are convinced the HB is in all the way and the crank pulley is correct I think you may ultimately have to space the WP and PS to match the crank pulley.

I found that eyeballing the pulleys only gets you close. You need to tension the belts and confirm the belt runs are true and that they aren't slightly deflected coming up to or leaving the pulley.
