What all is needed for the swap
« on: August 26, 2007 - 05:38:22 PM »
I got an unexpected visitor today when i was working on a customers car in my driveway. This guy pulls in his jeep, gets out and starts walking to the Challenger and says is that yours. I said yes and started talking about it. Find out that he is new the the base, been here all of 3 days, and he saw it parked on the street Friday when he got here. Come to find out that he has a 73 Barracuda in need of much TLC. He has a 340 in it and wants to put a 440 in it. What all would he need to swap it out? I am going to go over there and take a look at it as he says that it is poping through the intake and adjusting the timing is not helping at all. any ideas on that? once he gets moved out of TLF (temporary living facilities) and into the regular base housing he is going to attempt to join up with us. Let me know your thoughts on the popping and what it will take to get the small block out and the big block in. thanks all. and i know   :useless: so i will post them after i get back from his place.

He needs the radiator, 440 engine, accessories kickdown linkage ect, 440 E-body motor mounts, Bigblock 727, shorter driveshaft.

The best thing would be to get the comeplete setup out of a NewYorker or something and swap everything over. That way you already have all the special brackets for the accessories and kickdown linkage. Then you can buy the bigblock radiator, E-body mounts and cut down the driveshaft

The popping through the intake can be a stuck/bad intake lifter , bent intake pushrod, or worn cam lobes. Or something as minor as water in the gas or bad wires.

Very simple swap to a bb. if you bought one out of a c body car 67 to 72 complete with trans and pullies, it all fits right in there. even the engine mounts. Radiator hose on the drivers lwr side. A small block radiator will work. Re core it to a 3 row and let the shop change the lwr hose over for you. Then it's exhaust time. If the 340 has a 727 the drive shaft will work too.

Looks like a great project!!!

I had turbo Daytona seats in my '74 Barracuda when I first started driving it.  Same color as those seats in that car. I used E-body seat tracks and I think all I had to do is drill two holes in the seat frame to get them to bolt right in.

As soon as I could I installed some Barracuda seats in there but the Daytona seats were comphy

Nope.  Two separate cases one for smallblocks and one for Bigblocks.   904s also have two cases.  one for smallblocks and one for Slants
