I'd like to help ArcticCuda but by the time i took ownership of my car, nothing remained above save for the overhead console wiring harness. I have accumulated a few overhead consoles over the years and the material that was on them is only slightly spongy and very thin - almost sheer, like nylon without the strength - and without any padding added. Here are a couple of pics.

The folks rebuilding my R/T SE just recently finished freshening up an Oldsmobile Omega. One of the items replaced was the headliner and the fellow who did that piece said he could use the same GM headliner material cut to match the original pieces for my Special Edition for less than $200. I've always been curious whether GM headliner material would work as it seems to be the closest to what Gran Coupes and Special Editions originally used. Maybe too thick? We'll see :dunno: Anyways hope these help

I had the original headliner on mine, but it was all ripped and in poor shape.  The original material is very thin, and slightly velvety.  I took a sample to the local fabric store and picked up something that was similar.  When I figure out how to install the headliner, I will post some pics.

I have started restoration. Cardboards need lots of TLC...

This text is from Dante's pages;

Foam -backed headliner material

This is the foam backed material which is used on all one piece cardboard headliners, 72-76 A-body, 70 Dodge Challenger SE and 70 Cuda Gran Coupe. Available in black and other colors.

Roll of 3 yards-$65.00

At least your pieces have more integrity than mine. Good luck, take your time, and if you can, note the install steps :grinyes:

I have to replace my headliner also.  I got a sample of the thin material with the foam backing from a company in South Carolina.  I will try to find the company name.   Dante's description seems  to be correct.  And I think the price is about right also.    Installation was suggested  as to turn the base board upside down and apply glue to 1/2 of the board. Lay the material over it  gently and use a beach ball to put pressure to make it stick to the glue area.  This will prevent hand print marks from uneven pressure.    The foam backing is polyurethane and is only about 1/4" thick.   Hope this helps.

I don't know if this will help anyone or not.  I spoke to a guy who is reproducing the headlinner boards.  I have not seen one in person.  I have 2 cars that use these.  I do have an original that is in pretty good shape.  I have it stored and can't get to it for pics. The headlinner material is the same as GM used.  Both GM and Chrysler bought it from the same supplier.  Use only 3M spray glue on them.  The other companies do not have the longevity of 3M.
Here is the email from the reproducer.

Tod,
I have attached a few pics which show the headliner. Pic 1 is the origional headliner, pic 2 is the new , and 3 is the new laying in the origional.
I have sold 4 so far (over the last year) and no one has has any issues.
I will soon be offering the headliners with the fabric installed so all you would have to do is install in your car. The current source of fabric charges too much ($125+). I am working on an alternative supplier and the goal is to reduce the cost and pass it on. If this works out, I will price the headliner backing at $400 and offer the backing with the fabric installed for $550.
If you have any more questions let me know.
Thanks
Steve

I was at a JoAnn's Fabric Store (nationwide, I think) and they had something they called "headliner material".  It was on about a 60 inch wide roll on the wall.  It had about 1/4" urethane foam with a  black fabric coating. The black coating looked like the top of a mousepad.  I didn't get it because I was looking for real fabric to re-cover ours.  When we took off what was left of the existing fabric, we didn't see any foam backing.  The fabric appeared to be applied right to the board, although most of it was gone.  The console piece clearly had no foam backing, as that is still 95% intact.  The foam backing makes aesthetic sense to me, but I'm not sure it's original.  As far as the fabric, I chose a "microsuede" that looked pretty close to the original.  JoAnn's only had it in 48" widths so I ordered on line from a place that had it in 58" widths.  Here's the link:
https://www.fabric.com/home-decor-fabric-solid-fabric-microsuede.aspx
I'll let you know how close it looks when I get it in a couple of days.

Here are a couple of photos of the headliner in my 70 RT/SE. I've owned it since 1973, so it's original. Fabric looks and feels like velour.

Thank you all. Great pictures and good info. I ordered material from Dante. I'll post pictures when I have received it.

By the way. Mike70; Your RT/SE sounds awesome. Do you have more pics?
