Way back in the beginning of time (ok, it was 1981), I had a friend with a 1974 Duster. The original slant 6 was pulled, and a 318 was installed. After a couple of 7 1/4" diffs were put unceremoniously out to pasture, he found a 1970 Duster parts car. We swapped in the 318 and the 8 3/4" diff with limited slip 3.55 gears, and re-tuned the Holley Economaster 2V carb. This thing flat screamed! It only had the stock 318 manifolds and 2" duals with glasspacks, but it was a real scooter. One day, my friend was driving, and a '69 Firebird 350 HO challenged him to a race. He stepped on the gas, and promptly blew the poor 'Bird driver away! They pulled into a parking lot up the road a piece, where the Firebird owner demanded to see under my friend's hood. With a huge grin on his face, my friend opened the hood to reveal a 318-2V with stock exhaust manifolds. This guy spent almost half of an hour looking for the hidden nitrous oxide system, and would not believe that he had been walked on by a 318 with a two barrel! My friend offered to put the 'Bird owner in touch with me, so I could tune his car like the Duster. I never heard from him. 318s RULE!
