Updated: Coil question... And distributor question
« on: September 01, 2007 - 04:07:15 PM »
On my 70 'cuda 383 I have a Mallory dual points distributor (part no 2557701) and a PerTronix Flame Thrower II coil. Does this coil match the distributor? I don't have a ballast resistor. I was thinking of getting the Mallory Coil (part No 29217).  Do I need ballast resistor then?  The reason I want to switch the coil is that I have trouble starting my 'cuda when it's cold, even during the summer.

Your problem is possibly related to power loss in the electrical system, check your voltages to the coil in the start mode & see if it's much below 12 Volts. If so cleaning burnishing plugs & contacts may help, a local club member engineered a relay to solve his problem.

OK, I'll check that. So the PerTronix Flame Thrower II coil should work with my dual point distributor, without any problems?

Will it work better with a Mallory coil. Or should I just replace the distributor and coil with a better electronic system, like Mopar Performance or MSD?

I would look into replacing the dist with a electronic one , the coil is fine

Ok, I'll look into that. I replaced the spark plug wires today and that did wonders. It starts much easier now. But I'll look into replacing the dist anyway.

   :iagree:

I know it will cost you some money, but at least the electronic ignition will be more efficient, and not need any adjusting as with the points system.

With no resistor, you may simply be wearing outt eh points faster than normal. All that means is you should own a dwell meter, and spend some quality time under the hood more often. Hard starting is a possible sign of worn points, and setting point gap is not really very accurate. I'd simply use the right procedure and set the dwell on each set of points, possibly file or replace them, and see what it does. Or, you can upgrade to any electronic.

That's the basic system right there, but some people have had trouble with that orange ignition box since it is now made in China.  :eek4: My electronic ignition system came from FBO.  4secondsflat.com

What about these:

Or MSD
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=MSD%2D8545
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=MSD%2D6420

The box is great and I think that is the distrib. I have, MSD pro billet.  Starts nice, has plenty of spark power and the adjustability is good.

What's the difference between the to system I have listed here? What would you guys suggest?

1:
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=MSD%2D8545
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=MSD%2D6420

2:
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=MSD%2D8386

the second system is a self contained system not needing an external ing box to work with the dist
