New speedo cable prob.
« on: September 02, 2007 - 02:12:53 PM »
I have replaced the speedo cable on the 'cuda with one from Y.O.  It's fully on the speedo, tight on the tranny.  I get no speedo reading... :clueless:    I'll check both ends again.   Is there more than one cable?

I assume there is a inner drive cable inside the housing ? Was it working before , do you have a drive gear inside the tranny? Is the drive gear clocked to the correctr position to mesh with the main shaft ?

The same thing happened to me. I fixed it by taking the cable loose on the tranny end and pushed the inner cable (inside the sleeve) up towards the dash. It moved about 1/2" or so and it engaged the speedometer and worked fine after that.

I have no evidence to back this up, but I believe there MUST be a different cable from 70-71, to 72-74.

My history... My 70 gauges looked like crap, and the tach and clock were dead meat, so I replaced them with a set of later year gauges until I could afford to have the originals redone. Suddenly, the speedo wouldn't work.   :stomp: I took the cable out of the end that plugs into the speedo, and wrapped a couple of layers of masking tape on it, and it was fine after that.  Go figure...  :clueless: What I'm saying is, maybe that cable is just turning inside your speedo housing and not touching anything. Other than that, I agree with Chryco. Was your speedo ever working? It could be the gear inside the tranny causeing you problems, or maybe it isn't "clocked" to the size of gear it is??

cables are not different, sounds like the tape filled in a wear area in the cluster.

I agree with Barry and MEK. The inner cable probably is not engaged with either the trans or speedometer.

There are a few bad aftermarket cables out lately though (I've heard). You can also buy one from your local Chrysler dealer if needed. Mine has worked fine so far.
