Sigh. Looks like I have a 318
« on: September 12, 2007 - 11:10:23 AM »
I was under the car changing out the starter and found the numbers stamped on the side of the engine.....   318  .... was in the sequence.  So not only was it not an original manual transmission and had plastic covered aluminum cans for floorpans it isn't even a 340 in the engine bay.  When I get home I'll pull all the numbers I can and post them here.

True enough, I read that article, though it was sold as a 340.  I still have his ad that states its a 340.  Also, it has a 770 Holley Street Avenger on a Holley high rise and it has a mild cam which leads me to believe its already been built up a bit.  I'm just worried that the bank will find out and demand money back for a change in value since it was misrepresented as a 340.

VIN, Fender tag and build sheet show its a 340 car.  Its VIN has the H in the right spot.  JH23H3B230211.  The guy said it was the original engine.  It wouldn't have made a difference if it was numbers matching or not, but it would have affected my offering price.  Guy was asking 14, but took 12.  I would have offered around 10.5 if I knew it was a 318.

Whoa, original #'s block compared to non #'s makes a big difference in $$.  I'm surprised you didnt look?  Oh well, hindsight is always 20/20.  Are you local to the guy?  I would go and let him know.   :swear: :villagers:

I would call him out on it...  you might not get anywhere though. Buyer beware and all that JAZZ...

Unfortunately you should have had it checkout and verified before buying the car. Sorry. :faint:

Man, the seller is the ultimate chump. :villagers: Sounds like this dropkick, needs, ahhhh? a, dropkick!  :thinkerg:

I would definitely try to do something about it, the cans & number plate tricks were bad enough now BSing about what engine the car had. Guys like that not only ruin the hobby but hurt the good guys like yourself.

Keep us posted.  :sadwavey:

Well there is only one person at fault and thats me, I should have visually checked the numbers on the block.  Though why on earth does Mother Mopar hide them under the car.  Somebody mentioned that its possible he didn't know and somebody told him it was a 340.  Which is possible.  He represented it as a 340 to me and to my bank's agents since it was a long distance purchase (I am in Austin he is in Ardmore, Oklahoma).  I went to see the car, looked it over pointed out some problems that were visible.  Leaking gas under the carb (easy fix), rust in the lower kick ups, carpet was new, but not the correct 2 piece, none of the gauges worked but otherwise the car was solid, hence my offer of 2k below asking.  Car was solid, complete interior and was in great driver condition.  The carb is pretty large for a 318.

What's the date code on the block? I've heard of some early 318s being capable of supporting a 340 sized overbore. Also, might check with some machines shops about the viability of doing a cylinder displacement check. I don't know what the tool is called that does this, but there are some racing sanctioning bodies that use this method to do a calculation of cid.

318 or 340, your car still looks pretty cool, IMO!  I love that wide chrome trim up front!

How would the bank find out unless you tell them?
