Although it was your mistake not to check the numbers, it is not all your fault. The seller misrepresented the car when he said it had the original 340 in it. I would definitely hit him, er I meant hit him up about it.

I would run him over with the car and tell the cops you wanted him to get a better view of the numbers on the block a little better.....  :roflsmiley:

LOL.

i would be more worried about the floor pan

I already welded in a new floor pan and a transmission tunnel.  I detailed that in a previous post.

I guess its not really the bank finding out.  They are getting their money, its more the value of the car for insurance purposes and me perpetuating the fraud.  A 318 car is worth less than a 340 and if I were to have an accident and they found out I could be guilty of misrepresenting the value of the vehicle.  I do believe that would void any payout.  Anyway, I'm a couple of hours away from getting out of work and I can confirm those numbers.

...On the plus side, you will be getting better gas mileage with the 318.  :ylsuper:

With my 6 speed I've been getting 10 - 11 miles to the gallon.  I think its running a little rich with that 770 carb.

A 770 MIGHT work on a hopped up 340, but it's too much for a 318. So that might be a problem right there. I would think something in the 600-650 range max would be a better fit.   :2cents:

Hell, a 318 could get away with a 2 barrel carb.  I crawled under and got the casting number for the block

2536030-318-5

Where are the head numbers located?  Under the valve covers like a Chevy?

I hate to admit this but I agree with MEK. :pullinghair:  I have a 318 with a mild cam and run a 600cfm Eddy. It works great. It had 2 barrel on it when I bought it and it wouldn't stay running. Gas mileage is great unless I kick in the secondaries. :burnout: :burnout:

Looks like the seller lied to you all the way around. He knew about the floor and never told you, so he probably knew about the motor as well. I hate people like that.

The car is a real 340 car, but it has a non-numbers 318, right? If you are worried about the insurance, put a 340 in it. It's still going to be a non-matching car. Or get a junk 340 and throw it in the back of your garage and tell the insurance company that you are running the 318 while you rebuild the 340.

The bank will never find out, unless you tell them. Neither will the insurance company unless something happens or unless you tell them. If you tell them that you were just going by what the seller told you (Which you did) and you didn't know any difference, they can't prove any different. You didn't know about it until you actually looked at the numbers.

Right, it is a real 340 car  .What's the head 's no's?  How long have you had it? Just cruise with your 318, over the winter find you a 340 and build it .Be in by spring. No sweat. that is the pits tho. I bought my 73 340 cuda not knowing it had a crack in the block ,but I didn't even drive it after getting it home ,started a motor rebuild {it didn't run very good   }me or the machinists didn't notice the crack till we were loading it ,after machining was done! I still have it no. matching the car ,can be fixed. In 1984 ,Got it cheap enough not to sue.Excellent paint and body otherwise .Your car looks nice !I would let him know tho.that you found out at least!           >:(

:iagree:  I had a stock 318 before and a 600 cfm was good on it.  Your mileage surprises me a little unless you always do this:  :burnout:

Oh, well, when life gives you lemons, make some lemonade.... like Dustu said, find a 340 and build it up.  Or a 360, might be easier to find....

If you decide to keep the 318, is it better to tell the insurance so that the car isn't misrepresented?  How much of a difference would it make to the insurance company?  Like Dustu said, it is a 340 car originally anyway, isn't it?  :clueless:

Are you in Texas?  I like craigslist.org for stuff.

Well, right now money is tight as I'm trying to get my 71 Corvette in running shape since it didn't sell.  The Challenger will have to wait a bit before I could shift some money into it.  I've already spent quite a bit on it with the Classic Air A/C and the Richmond six speed, which is probably geared wrong for a 318.  I may switch out to a smaller carb in the meantime though.

BTW, I tried contacting the guy I bought it from, but never got an answer on his cell.  I did have an email he sent via his father-in-law so I sent him a message there.  His father in law responded that he will pass along the email, but quickly distanced himself by saying he knows nothing about the vehicle.

I finally had time to pull the valve cover off.  The numbers I have for the cylinder head are 26583(could be an 8)20-4 and 10036.  These are the numbers towards the front of the head under the rockers.  That one 3 could be an 8 or a 6.  It is very hard to read.
