So the first part of the drive was pretty uneventful, the car was running warm but ok, however I was running on fumes - still powered by my single cup of coffee and yogurt from 7am. Lodi, Stockton, Tracy and we are onto I5 south to LA. Couple of gas stops with the second being a food break. Thumbs up and pictures - one guy asked me to rev it up at the gas station. I'm liking this so far. I was telling the same guy about our trip and he said he started out in Idaho today -  :faint: I thought I had a long day! The next leg brought us to the grapevine, not so much traffic since it was near 11pm by the time we got there. Next stop - Palmdale. I've never been to Palmdale before so there was some navigation to be done, that ended up being no big deal. East on 138 and we are heading into the hills. 138 is a pretty deserted road at this time of night and we were cruising along. Coming up on our exit and I'm feeling pretty good, going to make it to the hotel and get some sleep. Then it happens - car going the other way whips it around to come up behind us and there you go. CHP. Got popped for speeding. 80 in a 55. At least he only wrote me up for 65 but still.... Midnight, all I want to do is go to sleep and forget about all this BS. Get to the hotel, there are still some of the guys up drinking and having a good time. We meet Tim (the organizer of speed fest) in the lobby when I check in, he gives us a little background about everything which I immediately forget because I'm so tired. Get the keys to the room. It's after 1am and I want to sleep.

So the next day starts out ok, hit the breakfast buffet and load up on food. There are a number of racers there talking about the days activities. I'm feeling better, we made it here and the car was still in the parking lot when we woke up so things are going ok. After breakfast, we load up the car and head out, but I had a little detour prior to getting to Willow Springs. Palmdale is the home of the Lockheed Skunk Works and the SR71 is my favorite plane. Near the Skunk Works is Blackbird Airpark. I wanted to stop by here last year when we came down for spring fling but it didn't happen. The hotel in Palmdale was 7 miles from Blackbird Airpark so I was going to make this happen. After a 10 minute drive we had a cool photo opportunity. It's cool that they have an A12, an SR71, J-58 engine and the drone on display. Amazing what they accomplished with a slide rule. Someday I'll be there when the museum is open (Sat-Sun only) maybe next year.

Sounds tiring ... but still fun! Stockton/Lodi is where I bought my car out of. I'd like to drive my car to see CA someday!   Is this trip an annual event for you or the first time?  (Just first time in the Cuda?)

This was the second year we drove the car to spring fling and the first year we went to MATS. I had been to spring fling with friends before. I'm hoping to get more of our club members (Capital City Mopars) to go to spring fling since it is what a car show CAN be - 4 days of stuff you can do with your car besides just sitting in a chair looking at it.

Love the color of your car! Is that an original color? Kinda looks like Viper blue to me.

My wife and I happened to pick the weekend of Edwards AFB 50th anniversary when we visited her son who was a F-16 crew chief. Three day air show. We got to see a SR-71 take off and make a pass over us at 80,000 feet. We couldn't even see the SR-17, we could only see the fuel the pilot dumped in a dash pattern so we could tell where it was. Amazing plane!

So after stopping off at Blackbird Airpark, we hopped back on the freeway and headed out to Willow Springs. We needed to get there pretty early so that we could attend the driver's orientation meeting. Couldn't ask for better weather, maybe 65, clear, sunny, light breeze. There were some other makes of cars at the track besides Mopars so there was a bit of variety but overall there were maybe 30 cars in total. The driver's orientation went well and we attended a basic driving course with one of the instructors before heading out on the track. All the newbies were in the second group, so the experienced drivers got out on the track first. I have to say that if you ever have a chance to drive your car on a road race track - DO IT! I had a great time. Did a ride along with one of the instructors in one of the track cars (Ford Fiesta ST) - it's amazing what an experienced driver can do with even a bone stock car on a race track. After the ride along, it was time to check out driving the track for ourselves in our own cars. I asked one of the instructors to ride with me. I was not concerned with going fast, only making sure I was hitting the apexes that were marked with cones and getting the car set up correctly for the next corner. It was a little unnerving to have the instructor grab the steering wheel to point me in the right direction in the middle of a corner, but it did help illustrate where we needed to be. I felt good enough after some time with the instructor to go out by myself in the next session. So once the fast session ended, I went out. After a couple of laps to get used to it, I was really happy with how the car was driving. It handled much better than I expected it to on the track and the tires were working really well. I found out that I didn't have enough gear on the straightaway in 3rd, the car would top out ~110-115 mph with the converter unlocked. Rather than mess around trying to tune the transmission, I just kept driving. The general consensus is seat time is the most important thing so that is what I worked on. After a while, I wanted to take a break - the manual steering box is a bit of a workout in the slower corners - so I pulled into the pits to watch others drive and check out the other cars. The break turned into lunch, then it was time for the drag race thing. I guess this was a first for the speed fest, an arm drop/no burnouts/1000 ft/run whatcha-brung kinda deal. I didn't get out until the 2nd to last car left so I got paired up with a newer Mustang GT500 - with a license place that read "650 HP". So once I got lined up with this guy, I knew the only chance I had to beat him was to get the jump at the start. I got away first and didn't see him at all - until the finish line. I thought I beat him but they said he got me at the stripe. So that kinda sucked, came back to the pits and watched the rest of the guys run, so who wins the whole deal? A guy in a Nissan GTR, that was a letdown but overall it was fun.

This was the drag race at lunch time:

Love the write up Eric!  You car looks amazing in person.  I'm glad you made it back home ok.  My trash for MATS was pretty similar and I need to write it up.

Mr. Shul lives north of us in the Yuba City/Marysville area (Near Beale AFB), we were driving through town and decided -spur of the moment- to see if his gallery was open. It wasn't, but he answered the phone and told us to come by and he would open the door. We ended up talking to him for almost 3 hours and he showed us the gallery. He has a couple of his images in LARGE (like 3x5 foot large!) format that is breathtaking in person. I wish I had a space to fit one of those in our house. I hope he opens his gallery soon, he is a gifted photographer. Not to mention having lived a pretty amazing life so far. Really cool guy, and the reviews of the books are spot on. I read the first one cover to cover as soon as we got home and the second one the next day. I've re read them several times since. Just talking about them now makes me want to read them again  :2thumbs:

thanks Travis - I'm writing this stuff down because so much happened and I want to remember it all before it starts fading from my memory- you have to truly love these cars to put up with all the BS they can bring along but the highs far outweigh the lows. I enjoy reading about your adventure as well  :2thumbs:

Thanks!

It's not an original or chrysler color, it's an import color that I picked out of a chip chart at the paint store

Back to the story -

After the lunchtime drag race, the track was opened up again and I went out for some more seat time. This time I was being more aggressive than the other two sessions. I was still letting people pass me so I wouldn't have to worry about traffic and I could concentrate on hitting the marks. Turn two at willow is a long sweeper and when I exited it on this lap, I saw a puff of smoke. I couldn't really tell where it was coming from and the car was running ok, so I kept going. I must have got out early in the session, as there were not too many people on the track when I started, but now there was a bunch of traffic in front of me. Then I got waved by which was cool, I got to pass some people at high speed and I was on my way again. A few more laps and I was feeling really comfortable with the car and getting faster but then there was a yellow flag, so I slowed down and tried to figure out what the yellow was out for. Just at the end of turn 9 (I caught the yellow at turn 4 so it was a long way from the problem car) was a Porsche turbo with a flat right rear tire. Our session was going to end anyway so I went back to the pits. I have this on video but I have not converted it yet. You can see me get passed by an AMX, a new Challenger and a new Charger, then I get to pass a Super Bee and a couple of other cars. Anyway, back in the pits, I'm checking out other cars and talking to some of the drivers and stuff. I even talked to Bob Tarrozzi (sp?) for a while - neat guy. When I walked back to the car, and noticed there are some spots on the ground in the back, which is odd. So I get under there and find the source of my puff of smoke - gear oil GREAT! so there is gear oil all over the axle housing, rear sway bar, gas tank, exhaust, valence panel and the brake drum backing plate. Since I've had an axle seal fail before and saturate the brake shoes on the passenger's side, my first thought is that the driver's side axle seal failed. I'm not upset because I actually put a spare in the toolbox before we left so I can change it if I need to. However, the more I think about it, the less sense it makes. I'm looking at the axle vent and the most oil accumulation is around the fitting - the fitting with no vent hose on it. Oops! That ended my day since I did not have any hose to put on the fitting and it took a while to clean all the gear oil off everything. Did I mention that we wrapped the exhaust pipes where they go by the fuel tank, so the heat wrap was soaked with gear oil? Made for a nice aroma while driving  :smilielol: After the car was cleaned up, we were getting near the end of track time and we still had to drive to Van Nuys -70 miles- to get to the hotel for Spring Fling. The guys at the track were going to go to dinner, but with it getting late we decided to bail out of that and head towards LA. Again - track day near you? YOU MUST GO! There were guys with race cars, street cars, Hyundai's, assorted econoboxes that couldn't get out of their own way, no one went off, there were no accidents or issues all day besides the guy with the flat tire (who had his car towed away). Everyone had a good time! The drive to Van Nuys went well - no tickets! We got checked in and then spent some time cleaning up the car for the Malibu beach cruise in the morning. The thing that is nice about staying at the host hotel is it is only 1.5 miles from the park where the show happens. There weren't a whole lot of mopar people there on Thursday night, just couple here and there. Finally we can get a good night's sleep...
