3rd member, which one to go for..???
« on: September 19, 2007 - 06:00:46 PM »

At last I got a clear answer from Randy's ring and pinion.

But, - which one do you think I should go for, - or can it be done better/cheaper else where..???

Shouldent the 489 be the strongest..???  They got it as the cheapest..???

Is the Auburn like the original MoPar posi..???

We do not have 3.23 ratio for any of the casting numbers.  As you probably discovered the 3.23 ratio is very difficult to find.  The lowest ratio we have is 3.55 and goes higher from there.

We do have the higher ratio 3rd members in stock.  Currently an 89 bolt in 3rd member is $1044.39 and comes with an Auburn posi while the 42 bolt in 3rd member is $1276.47 which also comes with an Auburn posi.  The 42 bolt-in with 355 and a Detroit Locker will run you $1276.47.

I'd go with the 89 and an auburn. The locker will make a ratcheting noise around corners.

posi is chebby terminology.   ;)Mopar differentials are referred to as Sure-grip. Two styles were available being the clutch and cone type.  The Auburn is the cone type.  I just bought a clutch type differential called the Dyna-Lok.  I think it's made by Dana.  I think they are on permanent back order right now through Yukon but I found one at a dealer.  Here is a website with info on the 8 3/4.

Yes. Auburn was one of the original suppliers to mopar.

Another place to shop for gears is Reider Racing; http://reiderracing.com/ I've always liked them better than Randy's.

A street car, I like the Tru Trac. No clicks, positive locking, no clunks or tire squeals on corners. I've seen plenty of the new auburns get fried in a year or less with a little abuse. So I think I'd lean towards a clutch type remanned if I had to stay in factory stuff..

i believe the price differential is due to the availability of the 489 in comparison to the 742.  The 489 case was produced in larger quantities, hence they can sell them at a lower price without worriment of replacing the case with difficulty.

not only availablity but also the fact that the cone are throw away once they are worn where the clutch can be rebuilt indefinatly & are far stronger so they get a better resale price due to quality
the True Track / Torson design are the best I have seen
