here's my story
« on: January 09, 2004 - 05:26:26 PM »
As a child growing up, we were a phord family.  That was the only brand I knew since dad was engineer at the phord plant in Detroit.  So as a child I was not around anything but phord.  After the divorce of my parents, I started high school and my attention turned to cars at about 14.  One day I asked my best friend at the time, "If you could have any kind of car in the world, what would you get? He replyed " a 'Cuda!"  I said "Really!" and thought to myself. . . "I don' even know what that looks like"  About 3 weeks later I was at my mother house and my older brother had a friend come over looking for him but he wasn't home.  I heard a loud rumbling in the driveway and looked out the window and saw this awesome looking car sitting there and I tell you . . . I couldn't get out the door fast enough to see this car.  It was a 1973 black on black cuda and beautiful it was!!  So far in my life, that was the most awesome car I had ever seen!!  ;D  3 years later I'm 17 and in the market for my first car.  My brother calls me and says, "he has a buddy that has a 'cuda for sale!" All I could think of was that black 'cuda.  So . . . he drives me about 50 miles to his friends house and on the way there, we are driving down the road and coming at us is a 1971 purple convert. with white billboards. (never seen billboards before)  As it roared by, I felt chills run up and down my spine. I thought to myself, " now that was the coolest car I had ever seen"  8) We arrived at his friends house and low and behold, it's that black 'cuda.  $2000.00 is a fair price in 1982 but I still offered $1800.00 and bought the car.  The car had sat for about a year so it took some time to get it to roar to life but once it did, it thumped pretty good.  I had to drive the car home that day with a dead battery (had to bump it to start it) I'm new to a 4 speed so that was a bit tricky with a dead battery, (don't stall)  4'11 gears in the dana made for an interesting ride on the freeway.  I kept thinking, "there must be one more gear  ??? ! and a gas gauge that didn't work! (I had a gallon in the back just in case)  Good thing 50 miles isn't too far.  :)  But now I still have a picture of that purple convert in my head!  ??? So almost 17 years later in 1999 I saved some cash and decided   :D  that now is the time to fill that convertible craving!  So I took off a month from work and set out across the country to find a convert.  I flew to Arizona where my father lives and searched the whole state.  Of course he thought I was crazy buying a "brand X".  After a week in AZ,  I headed into New Mexico and then Texas.  I really wanted somewhat of a solid car so after another week and no convert., I stayed along the golf coast and into New Orleans, Atlanta, and then down to Miami, Florida.  I had reached the end of land (Miami) and my month was about done so I booked a flight back to Michigan empty handed.  On my way to the airport, I found an Auto Trader that I had missed and low and behold  :o  a cuda convert  ;D  It was a white 1970 with a black top, 440 auto/floor (not original) 3:23 gears,  no dents, no holes, ad sounds good!  $12,500.00  I thought right away "what wrong with it"   ??? !  I'd been watching 'cudas a long time and the cheapest convert. I ever saw in my life was 20 grand in the 1980's!   I hit the nearest payphone and called the guy!  He actually answered the phone and said "yep still available!! If you want to see it I'm at work until 7:00.  I get directions and 3 hours later 6:30pm, I find the car! Its getting alittle dark now so I shine the lights on it and try to look it over the best I can in 15 minutes.  It had a '72,3,4, grill in it but he said he has the center section for a 70 grill at home.  The metal on the car was not bad but the Florida sun had taken its toll on the interior. The top was new and the trans had been replaced.  The car ran OK but certainly needed some carb adjusting.  I acted dissappointed with the car and made a low offer at the last minute before leaving. A quick negotation, and the convert was mine!  ;D  ;D  I don't think he knew what he had!  I got rid of my rent-a-junk and he had his girl come to pick him up and bring the title, by 7:15, I was back and asked "do you think it will make it to Michigan"  ??? !  He said "don't see why not"  So off to Michigan I go in a car I really don't know anything about.  I figure the first thing to do is stop at the nearest gas station and fuel up, check fluids and tires!  So I'm pulling into the station,  this guy is hanging out of his car yelling something.  So I stop and he comes up and beggs me to sell him my car!   ;D  I laughed and told him I just bought it 10 minutes ago.  He says " wanna make some money for 10 minutes work  ??? !  I looked at him and started to tell him the story.  He was presistant, actually offered me double what I paid, but to no avail!  ;D   I drove that car back to michigan with no problems and it only burned 1 quart of oil! (actually I think it leaked out).  The day after I got it home, I tore it into tiny pieces, stripped it to the core!  Now in 2004, the puzzle begins!  The body is painted and the fun begins!!  I'm gonna have a Purple and White Convert!  ;D  ;D  ;D  Here is the black car I've had since high school in 82! Not bad for $1800 bucks!

What a great story!  It would be cool to take a month off and go around the country looking for a car.  Hows the convert coming along?

4cruzin- WHAT A STORY!

I really enjoyed reading your story and can relate to your every move looking for the car of dreams!

My fascination with the cuda started at the age of 13 back in the summer of 1979 when watching a movie Phantasm on the big screen.  The moment the cuda appeared in the movie I just fell in love!  I had never seen a car that looked soooo wicked and mean!  I will never forget that day and told my brother next to me that I am going to have a car just like that when I can drive.

looking at your black cuda reminds me of the original phantasm car in that movie.  Besides the year differences......grill / tail lights / fender gills on the 71...your car with the ss craigers is the phantasm car minus the flared rear quarters and the blue pin striping on the movie car.  I love the round tail-lights on the 72-74 cuda's.

Back  to story.... 25 years later...I searched and searched for the right car ( 11 years) ....had to be a 71 and had to be TX9 black.  After one 74 cuda and a 68 R/T charger...I finally got my car.   I ended up with more then I originally was looking for but patience finally paid off.  There was never.... and will never be.... another car on the planet that made more of an impression on me then that black 71 cuda in the film Phantasm.  Thanks again for sharing your story....nice to know there are others out there that share the same passion for these awesome one of a kind machines!

 :)

i loved both of your storys. my story isnt quite as interesting but here it is.
a good friend of mine bought a 70 cuda from down south somwhere and i didnt know what a cuda was til i saw it and i was in love. at the time i was a, this is hard to admit here but oh well, chevy guy. that was the real thiing that changed me from chevy to mopar. another good friend had a challenger that i really liked too but the cuda just struck me like a club up side the head.
about a year or so after i saw the cuda for the first time i got a call early in the morning on a saturday, i wanted to sleep in, but it was my bud and he offered his cuda to me for 3000 bucks but i didnt have the cash as i was in the middle of a nasty divorce and paying child support.
so my search goes on for about another 10 years and to no avail. couldnt find a cuda i could afford. then one day i was talkin to my cousin and he said that a friend of ours has a 70 cuda that he might want to sell. i looked at it and what i saw was a pretty rough shape 70 barracuda, 318 auto, bucket seats and council. all numbers matching. i didnt let him know how interested i was and didnt even ask if he was wanting to sell it. about 3 weeks later my cuz said that the guy wanted to sell it or part it and if he didnt sell it it would be parted soon. so i got down to business and had my cuz work him over to find out what he wanted for it. he said that he thaught he would want about 600 but he didnt really say a price. well after another week my cuz called me and said that he got him to give a price and it was less than what i thaught 500.
i then found this site and asked what everyone thaught about it and the responses were all unanimous, BUY THE CAR!! so i got in touch with him and bought the car about a week later for 500 bucks. it is a numbers matching 318 car but hey its a place to start and i have always wanted a project car so that is what i bought ((its what i still can afford)child support and all) im just pumped to get started on the car i just bought  it about aa month ago and i still dont have it home, its safe in my friends garage, the guy i bought it from, he said its ok to leave it there til i can get it home.
i am so glad to have found this site cuz ive learned a lot about e-bods already and i just have a thirst for the knowledge that is abound on this forum and everyone seems to be really nice and helpful, except for the ricers that come and try to rile us up.
anyways cheers all and thank you all for makin this site a really great place to be.   ;D

4cruzin - i read your story like a book.. thanks. That 73 Cuda looks AWESOME! 'nuff said.

My abrieviated story.. is that I drove a 318 71 barracuda in high school.. girls loved it.. bondo & all. My bro sold it to me for $500, because he had just bought a 71 shaker cuda, 4spd.. ended up selling it for $2500 smackerzz because the fram rails began to rot. He actually foung the buildsheet in the backseat.. and tore it up.. no lie. It was a #'s matching 70, 340, n96 4spd car. It was Hemi orange & had the AAR stripe where at the end said "Might Mopar". He sold it to buy a new 1985 mustang GT.. yea, who would've known..  ::)

Anywho, I sold mine for some college food $$ & missed it ever since. In 1990 my friends cousin came into some money and decided to go classic car shopping. We quickly talked him out of buying a "smokey & the Bandit" Trans Am.. & instantly turned him on to the "Cuda". We actually found a couple 70 total rust buckets & said they were too much work.. he was not at all mechanically inclined. Then 1 day at lunch I bought NJ's local auto want Ad press.. low & behold.. I saw an add that simply read.. 4 Sale 71 cuda.. must sell $6500 firm (1990).
I instantly called & arranged for the 3 of us to go see the Cuda that night.. he said someone was coming 2morrow.. I said my friend is really interested & he has cash.. we were there dude!

Make a long story shorter.. we walked in the garage and there was 1/4" of dust on the car stacked w/ cardboard boxes.. but we all could not take our eyes off the shaker that was popping out of the hood. I think we could hear our hearts beating as we knew.. our friend was getting this car for 6500. The guy was Ed Hamburger's brother - n-law who gave the car to his 18 yr old son.. who wanted to sell it for a new car..dejavu.

I always felt cheated that I found the car but did not have the $$ at the time, but comes around goes around.. & 12 years later.. my friends cousin asked if I was interested in buying the cuda.. as he was need $$ for downpayment on a house for he, his wife & their new daughter.. So $12,000 later the Cuda sits in my garage now & I'm as fond of that car as when she first broke my heart 12 years ago. I have to say.. my Wife loves the Cuda as much as I do.. maybe not.  ::)

4cruzin, awesome story about how you received both of your E-bodies!  My obsession started back when I was about 13...I knew of a '69 Charger just sitting in the woods and by age 14, it was sitting in my garage!  I wanted to restore it, but it was too rusty for a kid to do anything good for it.  Last summer I finally sold it as a whole car and the new owner plans on restoring it because he had one when he was a teenager.  So now I'm working on my somewhat newly acquired '73 Challenger.  :)

thats a great ending, to a great story

mine all started with my friends polara and other friends dart and after working for my parents they gave me a truck. my step father was a Mopar Chevy guy, he has a bunch of dodge trucks from the 70's and a few chevy cars, 65 vette, 66 Chevell converitble, and a 57 chevy bel air head 4dr.

back to the story. my friend with the dart has it parked for more than a year and drives a Ranger, my friend with the Polara, spun the bearings, got a mustang, sold the rat purchased a Indy Ram lost that and drives a Neon ??? ??? ???

I started with a 74dart se 4dr 318 auto (never drove it)
then my pick up 77 1/2ton 318 auto 4x2 (crazy lady hit me in 9/00 in a 00 rat the $350.00 truck I got 1700 off and sold it to a friend who still drives it. before the wreak I purchased a 65 barracuda replaced the damaged front corner and bushings sold it a few months back. in May ish of 2001 a budy from work said his crack head friend was selling a Challenger (I can't afford that, get a price) $750.00 when can I pick it up, I even got to pay it off on the next pay period  :) hopefully it will run soon (6-12 months and then the storys will start) the only thing left it the challenger and a 83 Lebaron Convertible, there was a Geo and a Aspen in there some where.

 8) Great stories guys, my first two cars while in high school were GM , my parents bought them for me, needless to say , ..........well they were transportation for a teenager, but what dog/rags,lol. When I could afford to pic and buy my OWN car in 1965 ( yeh, I,m that damn old) it was a 1964 Sport Fury 383 high performance. And although I've had other x-brands I know there is nothing like a Mopar, old Mopar that is. Where did the Chrysler execs. come up with these newer "daily drivers"? Wish they would read the HISTORY of real Mopar might!!

WOW :o Those are some great stories!!  71 fish, I love how your story came around full circle. To end up with that car in the end was completely awesome!!  rev-it-up the convert. is coming along great!  Its going to be a new car when I'm done with it!  I hope to have the engine and trans in within the next month.  Their all ready to be installed, just need time!

To add to my story:  After I bought the black cuda in 1982 and drove it home,  I ended up driving it around  town for the next year and a half  (it was hard to go any distance with the 4:11 dana.)  The guy I bought it from said they were racing the car and I'd say the engine was alittle tired and needed going through. I say this because I was driving one day and all of a sudden, the car was the best bug killer around.  Smoked so bad I couldn't drive it anymore caus eI was afraid I'd get a ticket. Now since I was a teenager, I still lacked the knowledge and skill to repair the problem, so the car had to be parked until the time came when I would decide what to do with it. In the meantime, I needed transportation!! I found a 69 chebbie cam-raro, that I drove right into the ground!  It was so rusted, the floors were just about gone, the gas tank was dragging on the ground and more!  Rust Rust Rust!! So the cuda sat for about 6 years in the garage until one winter I got a bug up my butt to try and fix the car. The first step would be to pull the engine out and find the problem. So out the engine came but only to sit on the floor next to the car for another 4 years. But in the ten years that the cuda sat in the garage, I learned more about MOPARS and what the were all about!  My older brother would laugh when he went to moms.  The cuda sitting there with 10 years of dust, a couple flat tires, no hood or drivetrain.  Not a pretty picture  :-\  He'd tell me "listen, you'll never fix that car,  you might as well sell it to me, I'll give you a thousand dollars for it as is!"
He offered my that thousand dollars more than once, but to no avail!  My mind was made up!  I'm in my late 20's now and alot more knowledgable about cars.  So the engine wasn't that difficult, I discovered that #8 cylinder wrist pin came loose and gouged a nice little grove in the wall.  So after a rebuild and a sleeve in that cylinder, we're good to go on that.  But the body was needing attention and I wanted it to be nice. This was a problem.  I looked for probably 2 years for a body man that would tackle the project. Everyone was so involved with insurance work, classic cars didn't pay enough money.  And parts weren't exactually growing on trees!  When I finally did get a body man to come look at the car, all he wanted to do was buy it, not fix it for me.   >:(    Finally someone I work with said her neighbor has alot of nice cars coming out of his garage.  It panned out and the body was underway!! :)  About 9 months later, I got a call and was told the car was done.  All I had to do was assemble all the pieces.  Really the only thing I couldn't find was front fenders.  Fiberglass got me through until I could track down some metal ones.  My older brother still to this day can't believe that I actually finished that car after it sat for all that time, safely in the garage.  I sold that 69 chebbie for 15 hundred bucks which was just enough for me to complete the interior of the cuda. I thought it was a fair trade  ;D  Now its been about 10 years since I did all that and the car is in need of some minor attention again.  So  ;D  as soon as I complete the convert. I plan on tearing the black car down, fitting it with a nice new hemi, installing the metal fenders and going through the car to bring it up to snuff!  Then after that I think I'll either look for an AAR or build a drag cuda!  Big Fat Tires, Tubbed, roll cage, the smell of racing fuel and tearing up the track!   ;D   ;D

Awww guys... all these stories damn near bring a tear to my eye!! ::) :'( It's so great to hear how everyone got started... and now you guys make me feel so young!!

Here's mine!

Back towards the end of my elementary school days (late 4th grade, early 5th), my dad start remembering the good old days of his first Mopar. A 1973 Dodge Dart Sport with a 340 auto, red, with the white rear window stripe. He told me it reminded him of the Stutchky and Harch car... ::) As he was telling me stories about the car, he mentioned one. The Dart started running like a dog, so he tried rebuilding the AFB Carter that was on it, but to no avail... so over to the dealer it headed. A few bucks later, the thing ran better then new!! He said he could get it to downshift a gear or two and it would THROW you back in your seat like none other and then take off!!! :o :o I WAS HOOKED!!

Once the summer season rolled around, off to car shows we went... in search (without the Mother's approval of course!), for a car to fulfill both of our desires for power and speed!! :D ;D First, he started looking at the GTO's.... found a nice one, but passed it up. I didn't know the difference between ANY of the muscle cars... just that they ALL looked cool, sounded awesome, and went fast!! LOL!! He then got word of a '71 Challenger, Blue on Blue, 340 auto only a couple blocks away. He went to look at it, talked with the guy a bit, but didn't buy it. Then we left for our summer vacation for a week.... :o :'( Upon returning, the car was GONE... SOLD!! >:( So, we kept pressing on. At another car show, we found a purple Challenger (forget year and options), but, it was listed for a great price. One you couldn't pass up... approaching the car, we saw the new owner handing over the check for the car... just missed it again... this time even closer. Third times the charm!! (Let's hope!!) While at the Rt. 66 dragway (2 day Mopar Shoot-out), my dad called a guy that had a '73 Challenger listed for sale. He sounded so excited that we called, we just had to ask why. It turns out that the ad hosting company had screwed up his ad and had added an extra digit in the price where there shouldn't have been. So, instead of reading $6,000, it read $16,000. There was NO WAY the car was worth $16K, but knowing the error, we figured we'd take a look. Since we were on our way home, the guy met us at a gas station with the car... ::) when he pulled in, my heart stopped for a second. I just knew that we had to buy it!! Trying to withhold my excitement, my dad and I checked out the car and also took it for a test drive. The clutch was set up funny, and it had been MANY years since my dad had last driven a stick car, but, after getting over the stalling at every stop, he managed to have a little fun with it!! ;) :D After a little haggling, we bought the car, and Joe (the seller) drove the Challenger following my dad home... I had to ride in the car (just about crapped myself too!!)

That was in October of 1996. My dad and I spent the next several years fixing things on the car, taking it to cruises and shows and winning a few trophies in the process... until it came time for me to get a car!! At the same show that we were on our way home from when we stopped to look at his Challenger, there sat a '69 Barracuda in the For Sale area of the show field... a little more haggling, and the car came home on the guy's trailer... once again without Mommy's approval (or notification!)! LOL!! ;D

And that is how I got involved with my Mopar Family!!

LB,

That just goes to show that persistance does pay off!  Great story  ;D    It was also difficult for me cause I wasn't a phord, chebbie of mopar guy at the time.  I just liked cool looking cars!  Whether is was pontiak,  cheebie or phord . . . if it looked cool I liked it.  But when I saw those e-body cars, my heart started pumping excitement.  I still laugh because to this day I have young people pull up next to me and say  " NiCE CAMRARO"  I started happening so much, I just started saying "THANKS"  and think that maybe after I pull away they get a clue when they see my Licence  plate which reads "1 CUDA"    8)
