Putting tranny fluid in engine oil???

Hi guys,

Weird questions, thanks in advance. 

A looooong time ago when I was a teen, I remember a mechanic saying his "secret" was to put a quart of tranny fluid in place of a quart of engine oil during an oil change.


Are there any benefits/damage that the tranny fluid would do?

Is there a cleaning effect of the tranny fluid?  I know when I used to do tranny work, my hands had less dirt on them due to the tranny fluid.  Will this help to spiffy up the crankcase?

Any effect on the seals?  You kinda figure (although different environments) tranny fluid stays in the tranny longer than engine oil stays in the crankcase.... (I know, contaminents, blow by, etc...)

What are your thoughts?

I heard something along the same line back in the 80's, I can remember somethings from back then...
Anyway, I was told you could free stuck rings and lifters in an old engine that way. Never tried it. Just some old mechanic trick...

I personally wouldn't. I have however used it while the engine was running to clean things up some in there, and it can unstick stuck rings if you pour some in a cylinder and let it sit.

I remember back in the late 70's there was a flush-fluid that did the same thing. I think it was basically Kerosene. 

My personal opinion is don't do it. The oils now don't sludge up like back in the day. They didn't have synthetic oils back then either.

  Don't put it in a Cuda or Challenger... Maybe good for a lawn mower engine... Or an old Cheby...

There are better oils and additives than in the past....  Tranny fluid was the trick back in the day, but not anymore....

I've been told this too. When I asked about damage, the guy told me that tranny fluid is higher quality than motor oil. Wouldn't suggest running all tranny fluid instead of oild, though.

  Don't put it in any engine as a long term thing, it burns great leaving a white smog trail. It does free up sticky lifters and rings, but can also remove some of the sludge in a worn motor and that can cause that motor to burn more oil.

I put it in some of my engines. I bought an old 71 D100 that ticked a little and I just recently bought a 94 Z71 p/u that has 23X,XXX miles on it and I put it in it. Thing is though, you don't put it in the oil, you pour it down the carb or throttlebody while the engine is revved to about 3200 RPM. Never put it in the oil. I have used water too.
I have never heard of anyone putting it in thier oil. It makes alot of smoke but it doesn't hurt your engine at all. If anyone tells you it will they don't have proof, but after thousnds and thousands of miles driven after doing this my engines run just fine.

   Never heard of pouring it in the carb, but I have heard of doing that with water.
