Lucky trip!!
« on: September 21, 2007 - 06:31:45 PM »
Well last weekend we took the pickup and trailer with the T/A to Sioux Falls S. Dak. for the weekend. When we pulled in to SF we heard a weard noise from the rear of the truck. It keeped making it on the way home on Monday. It was a 500 mile round trip. I got a chance to look at it tonight. I feel lucky it held up and got us home. What are the guess on the repair bill?

:iagree: with the prices, but maybe a used rear would be cheaper and quicker to replace if you can find a low mileage one.

The truck is a 98 4X4 and it has 3:92's. I have always had good dealings with our local Dodge dealer so I'm thinking of taking it there. There is also a very good independant shop in Moorhead with a very good rep I was thinking about also.

My pinion nut came loose last summer, sucked the shaft in, locked it up on me when I was going 55 down hill.  Kinda scares a person.  Pretty much annhialated my rear end.  I went to a salvage yard, got one for $625 with about 40,000 miles on it.  I didnt want to do the rear-end work, or get a bill, so I comprimised.

Well we got the truck fixed last week. You guys were way off. It turned out that the sure grip came apart and destroyed the carrier as well as everything in the rear. They had to replace everything in site. The housing was completelly full of grindings and took a long time to flush out. They were surprized we made it the 250 miles home pulling the trailer. The expensive things were the suregrip and carrier and the ring and pinion set. The grand total came to $3,100. The only things they salvaged was the rear housing and cover! :money:

We concidered that way of repairing it but in the end we went the all new way. We take this truck all over the country so we decided we didn't want a used one and wonder when it's may or may not give out. We hoped this way would be more secure. Time will tell of course!
