Console rattle
« on: September 27, 2007 - 08:42:44 PM »
I have a very nice console on my 70 cuda but man does the lid rattle if I don't keep my arm on it.  I'm wondering if I'm missing some rubber bumpers or spacers, mine doesn't have any, only the latch to hold it down.
Any tips?

the latch is adjustable & you could add a rubber strip or bumper to the lid

My console doesn't rattle, but the lid fits like crap :poopoke: It has been that way from day one.  From the pictures I attached, you can see how the rear of the lid has a gap.  There are no rubber bumpers from the factory.  My only guess is that maybe the hinge with the 6 screws can be adjusted...I have never tried.

I think if your lid is making a rattle, the spring in your latch isn't doing it's job. It should always be ready to spring open.

I adjusted the hinge and only got a slightly better fit.  I thought the same thing as you, that the console was crooked.  I removed both rear screws from the console and when i lifted the ashtray end of the console upward toward the lid, the gap was nearly gone.  But without anything other than a block of wood, i had nothing to shove under the console to hold it in a more level postion.  With some wood under the console, you could now see a gap between the console and the carpet.  I put it back together the crooked way it was, and called it a day.   :-\  I'm open to ideas to get it level.

could it actualy be a screw at the front that is too tight?

try taking all of the screws out and see if the unit is true, if it is slowly start tightening it down all the way around.

I took a small 1/4'' strip of self adhesive backed black foam weather stripping and ran it along the strip where the console door closes. Worked good...no rattles.

Now if I could just stop the pistol grip from rattling.... :swear:

So did Blueglow have any luck?  Their problem sounds like it should just be a simple adjustment of the latch.  I had the same problem.

As for HooD, I hate to say it but it looks to me like the console itself is somehow twisted or out of wack.  If you pull it out and set it on a level surface, does the bottom sit flush along the whole length?  If not, then that could be the problem.  The lid looks flat, and I would think it would be real obvious if the lid was bent that much.  Just my  :2cents:
