I upgraded from the stock 50-60 amp alternator to an 80 amp. The problem is mostly gone, but does rear it's ugly head once in a while. I can live with it. If I go any bigger with the alernator, then I need bigger wires too. Can you sense I'm someone not looking to make more work?

Hey MEK, did you just have your stock Alternator upgraded or buy an aftermarket unit?  I'm thinking my stocker won't last too long after I get this thing going, along with an ignition upgrade and some fog lights.

BTW that CAP came with the Amp kit so I put it in.  The kit was 70 bucks IIRC.  Figured it couldn't hurt.

Nice move with the cap. Did you know with that charged, you can REALLY zap someone? Not that I would know about that. 

Anyway, my alternator is a chrome model that I bought on E-Bay. No name or number on it, so I assume it's after-market. Hopefully not  the often failing Powermaster.  I figured 80 amps was about all the stock wiring could handle. Since I have no AC anymore, the fan has died to the heater/defrost, there really is no drain other than my engine, stereo, and occasional headlights. I wish I could help you more Tom.

I still have the factory AM in working condition, but for the last few years I drove the car I had an ARA P-500 AM/FM Cassette deck, an Alphasonik 2x25 amplifier under the seat, and "Ultimate" brand speakers in the rear; no front changes (in fact the stock front speaker was toast by then so all sound was from the rear).  The parts all came from  1980's CES show in Las Vegas on the last day; that was the last year they allowed sales off the floor.  It did a pretty good job.

You can have a regular alternator rewound to give roughly twice the power. Check around and see if any of the electric shops in your are provide that service. There are a bunch of guys who make that their sole business. You then can get a stock alternator so your car looks factory correct but the power is there. One thing I am going to have to research is upgrading the charging system in my Challenger. It is a breeze in a newer car but I am beginning to think it is going to be a little more involved in our old cars mainly because of stuff like all the power running through the voltage gauge in the dash. Maybe a dual system will work with stock voltage to run the accessories and a dedicated second circuit that just runs the audio system.

Yeah there is a local place that does Alt's and Starters.  They do excellent work.  Fair on the pricing too.  I planned on running a seperate feed to the Battery(fused) along with the stock wiring, the Amp meter in the car won't read true but I'm not so concerned with that as long as the car don't burn.

That along with a relay upgrade on the Headlights should lighten the load on the factory Harness enough not to worry.

My 70 Cuda has a correct AM/FM thumbwheel radio and my 71 Challenger RT has a correct AM/FM radio in it. They both have 6X9 speakers in the rear package tray and stock style speakers in the dash.

That a TP-900 under your dash ?  Maybe not, it's FM only, no AM.  I've got a KP-500 ( cassette version )  Best sounding radio I've ever heard.  Stuffed a CD changer in the trunk that broadcasts over FM.  Left the AM radio in the dash.  A small set of enclosed speakers stuffed up under the dash and a pair of EPI LS-70s on the back deck.  All period 70s correct.

Yep, thats a TP-900.  Let me know if you need any parts for it, I have a couple laying around for parts.  After all these years, still the best sounding radio I've ever heard.  ( I used to sell high end audio and had access to any car deck you could name, this still beat the expensive stuff ). 

I started buying up period electronics at garage sales & flea markets a few years back.  Amazing how fast you can fill a basement with fuzzbusters, radios and speakers.

Don't forget to check out craigslist.org also.  I always peruse the free section.  I actually picked up for free 2 very large crates of 80's audio. I haven't even had a chance to inventory everything but there are at least 2 Blaupunkt AM/FM cassette head units, 3 or 4 very heavy amps, some ads speakers, etc....  I guess the guy was just cleaning house.  Have to see if any of it works!
