Painting brake calipers?
« on: September 28, 2007 - 04:20:31 PM »
Newbie Question - I noticed a number of people with updated front disk brake systems.  Several have indicated that rather than buy a more expensive brand name that they updated the look of their disc brakes themselves by painting their calipers RED.

Questions: (if you did this or know how to do it)

1. What kind of paint did you use?  Did you use a Spray can paint or spray gun?
2. Did you have to prepare the caliper for the paint?
3. What did you use to make them look glossy?
4. Any issues or dangers in painting them?

From what I've seen, the brake is disassembled and the caliper is powder coated and is dropped in an oven for the paint to set and cure.

I believe you can't just use any old paint because:
A) brake fluid will remove it
B) it probably couldn't stand up to the heat

But then again, I don't have any experience with it myself, so I could be wrong.  :dunno:

Due to the popularity of doing this, Plastikote has come out with a whole line of caliper paints. Various colors to suit every taste. Check your local parts store chain to see what they have.
