Thanks CP  ;)

What will I gain? I know I'll get better MPG but will I lose performance? Is there a button that has to be installed or do is there just one more gear after Drive?
Will it harm the trans in anyway, or do nothing at all except give me better MPG  ???

Thanks,

oh man, i completely brainfarted on the 518.

yeah, it screams with a 727 and i've never driven a 518. i'm sure o/d makes a big diff. so you might be pretty good with 3.91's

anyway, at least you know how a 727 owner feels about 3.91's i still love em but they aren't multifunctional that's for sure.  :)

Cheers Keith  ;)

Holy#$%! that's expensive!!

But it sounds awesome, and since I'll be getting an after market Hurst shifter soon it would be great fun to use, because you can get them with roll control buttons etc so I'm sure you could adapt that button to suit  ;D

Won't be anytime soon at those prices  :'(

Here i go thinking again  :o ::) ;D.....IF you get a 518 say out of a dakota or ram truck you can wire it up so the OD kicks in and you can run a lock up converter  if you get the relays...or you could just wire the od to a push button...enless your big blocking it i can't remember....and Keith Its all good..we all have brain farts lol.....I know what you mean about 727 with low gears...I had the 518 (pretty much 727) with out OD and it made my 318 scream and thats with just 3:55 gears...2800 at 55 and 3 at 60mph it was drinking gas for a highschooler with no job that has to pay for his own gas unlike some of the kids...:D:D....I got me a 92 shadow now

With the OD trans, a 4.10 would be perfectly fine for all use unless you live in Nebraska or some where that you can run 140 all the time.  Just remember, if you have 4.10s & you run about 3600 at 60, in reg 3rd gear, (depending on tire height) when you shift to OD, you will only be turning about 2520 rpm. (approx 30% reduction in OD)  Heck, you could run 456 & still be OK.  Basically, the same is true w/ Chryslers 3 spd man w/OD, so there is more than one way to skin a cat.  I have a Challenger w/ 3.91, & am seriously considering a 518 for it.   4.10 x .69=2.82  or  4.56 x .69=3.12  Either is a pretty good cruising ratio.     Ovmf

Hello Gp,  You didn't say what size tires you have, but you are right.  If you are not doing any open road running, it doest matter.  If you did add the OD,  you would only be turning about 2100 at 55.  But , if you're  not planning on touring w/ the car, the expense isn't really justified.  I like to go places w/ my cars occasionally, IE, I would kind of like to drive it to Carlisle, but 3.91s are a little steep for prolonged 75 mph cruising, not mention, the fuel bill will be steep too.  I'm still thinking about it though.  My '65 runs about 2800 at 60 w/ 3.21 & 225-60-14 rears.  The Chally would be somewhat higher I'm sure.    Ovmf

Since there was a lot of discussion about rpm's and mph, I decided to double check what my Cuda is doing on the highway.   Remember, I have the A-518 with the overdrive 4th gear (with a .69 ratio) and 3.23 rear gears.    My rear tire size is 275 60 15.

On the highhway at 2,000 rpms, the car is going 57 mph.     At 2,500 rpms the car going 70 mph.

Having that overdrive gear really makes a difference with the engine rpms and the interior noise level while crusing on the highway.

Which  cars or trucks came with a  A-518 trans OD.  Just looking to find one in a junk yard, and rebuild it.  Seems cheaper  :o than Gear Vendors or the 5 spd.
