Torque Converters
« on: January 12, 2004 - 08:40:45 PM »
Been researching torque converters and about ready to purchase.  I have about 6 different companies right now and don't want to just choose by price. Do you have any company preferences or names of ones to steer clear of?

These are the companies we're looking at:
Campbell Enterprises
Hughes Performance
Pro Torque
Transmission Specialties
TCI
PTC

We have a 383 with a 727.  Our rear gears are 3.23.  We'll be using the car just as a cruiser, not a racer.  With all that, we're thinking of a stall speed in the 2200 - 2500 range.  What do you think...lock-up or non-lock-up?  What are the advantages/disadvantages?

Go TCI, there the best IMO!!!!  8)

The difference (I think) in Lock up & Non converters is bugger all, The advantage of a lock-up is more efficient on the highway, when your in 3rd and the rpm's reach a certain level the dizzy triggers the torque converter, this makes the trans a straight 1:1 with no lost power from conveter slippage.
The Lock-up has a "weak" spot, the torque converter is no larger than the non-lock-up version, the clutches take up the same amount of room there for generating more heat.
I was told non-lock up is the way to go, last longer. He could be wrong but I won't be getting one any time soon  :)
I hope that helps some what  ;D

Anyone correct me if I'm wrong - I think that's all there. LOL  8)

Use a non lock up , the lock up will kill the power & fun in favor of gas milage ,
The JW & Coan are supposed to be great , I never use converters though just clutches

I should say that we used a JW 2500 HD converter behind the 440 /871  850 Hp engine we built & it lasted 2 seasons of racing at least [ Iwas not involved in the 3rd season , it may still be alive ??]
