Shifter decisions, again - LOL!
« on: January 14, 2004 - 08:13:29 AM »
Needing some help of deciding a shifter, some of you guys will remember I asked a while back.

I'm cut in half on two shifters:

# The slap-stik with a tilt-grip handle OR.....
# A Hurst Pitol-Grip Quarter Stick

1) The questions I need to know are, what console will be better for a Hurst shifter, 4-speed (more room) or an Auto console?
2) It's operated by cable, is this good? It just sounds cheap and tacky, where does the cable conect to and will it deliver good crisp shifts like if it was a steel rod?
3) Last but not least, I know I'll need to modifiy the console but as you can see in the photo, the Hurst shifter looks small height wise, what can/could I use to extend the height or lenght? They don't make shifter stick replacements for this model. Because it looks like I won't have much room to shift, like the shifter handle will be just poking out of the console  :(

Also will this shifter hamr the trans? Like will the shifting ay high rpm's through this shifter be harming it, probably not just curious as it's an after market shifter, can't be to careful :)

ANY help would be great thanks people.
Confused NZ  ??? ;D

Hey NZ, I use a Hurst Quarter Stick, but not the pistol grip version. When I bought mine 10 something years ago, they didn't have that style yet.  :(

I think it is a very nice shifter. It gives nice control w/ a short throw, and it is sturdy enough to take 10+ years of abuse.

I think I've replaced the cable once during that time. My first cable had to be replaced due to the cable sheath splitting (kinda close to the exhaust I think). But generally, the cable is stiff enough to give a nice firm feel to the shifts.

When you mock up the install: Some guys I know use a spacer to make the shifter sit up a little higher. Maybe you could test some different spacers to get the height where you need it, then weld in a little metal stand at the right height once you see what height you need. Just make sure that you have access to the reverse lockout lever which sits kinda low on the left side.

The shifter has good detents for making solid shifts without the fear of over-shifting. The neutral safety switch works well too. I don't think you will have any issues of harming your trans with this shifter.

IMHO, it is the best choice in aftermarket auto shifters. The B&M (Pro stick?) shifter is very similar, but I prefer the Hurst version because of the styling, and from favorable past experience with Hurst manual shifters.

Good luck, NZ.

Thanks for the input Autophile!  ;D

Now I've seen another shifter in the mean time while doing some re-search on shifters  ???
Now I'm really confused as to which shifter I should get.
I know one thing for sure I'm going Hurst so that's a start  ;)

I've seen the Hurst V Matic 2 shifter it has "normal" straight a head mode and it also has the Ratchet mode.
It sit's well and wouldn't be to hard to make fit in the stock e-body console.
I emailed HAMRS and they said that they can make a grip that screws on and locks up with detent screws, to make it feel more my own custom shifter.
Here's a shifter sitting nicley in a crapmaro (I think)
But see how it sits good, looks awesome and I heard they shift great  :D

Just thought I'd fill you lads in...................

I've decided to stick with the Slap-stik, I'm happy with that and I never knew that Hurst got there designs from it!!  :D
Plus one of the many things that made me change my mind was, chivis, phords and Bran X car's can use and do use these shifters, so why should I be one of them? I'll have something that they can never have and it shifts just as well if not better!!
It shifts hard and can't be over shifted, simply clean and looks Great with an added Tilt grip!! Can't wait to do some stomping!  8)

So are you going to stay with the original small "ball" shifter or are you going to do the automatic pistol grip?

I'll spice things up by adding the tilt grip shifter, the slap-stik was always a choice, and I'm glad I stuck with my Mopar and what it was made to have  ;D "Hopefully", there'll be a photo of the tilt grip attached  :D

i'll pop my 2 cents into the machine ...

i was ordering a bunch of stuff from summit one day when i decided to try a new shifter (young, dumb and full of *). I got the b&m pro ratchet, cut up my console (WHY?!?!?), painted the base cover black and stuck an eightball on the shifter. all in all it looks pretty cool. and everyone mentions it when they get in the car. plus i love the way it shifts. you can beat that thing to tuesday and it takes it, then begs for more.

i'll post a pic when i get the digi-cam. till then.

Thanks a lot REV and Tim440R/T Goog choice REV!!!  :D

Looks quite smart, stock with a dash of meaness!!  >:( ;D LOL!

Keith: They are good shifters even though I'm not a B&M guy I bet it does look nice, but I weighed out the options, and my car being pretty rare and all thought WHY?!?
why should I stick something aftermarket in that everyone can see while walking past or riding in  ;) Maybe a clone or a 318 but not in a 70R/T440 well not my one anyway  8) ;D

Thanks everyone, you'll see the end result once the Challenger's complete - don't hold your breath it'll be around August :-[ :'( :)
