    What a day . I am facing 2 problems .

    1) The starter is a little too long to let the headers bolt up . If I'm not mistaking when I bought the rebuild starter the man told me there was a shorter one but this one was more heavy duty and thus better for the 440 . Any feed back here ?

    2) The next problem is the steering shaft is hitting one of the tubes where it connects to the gear box . Not by much and I'm sure a hammer would take care of the clearance .BUT the headers are ceramic coated and I do not want to chip the ceramic . Now what do I do ?

    Any help will be appreciated . :feedback:

    I'd buy a high tq mini starter if it was me and make a mark where you need to ding the header with a hammer. Use a rag where your going to tap it. But.... You may get under your dash and undo a few column bolts to shift it up and down some and to the left if posible. There may be room in the slots to do this. You can use a starter off a 93 dodge 318 truck. It will crank a 500 cube 13.5 compression engine. I know, I did it to my car :bigsmile:

    Headman headers doern't work with mini starter. At least not with Powermaster's mini starter.

    I really like the idea about loosening the column bolts . I'll try that first . As for the starter that is close to fitting so if I can get one a little shorter . I have my fingers crossed . The starter will take a few days to see but I'll try the column tomorrow .

     :dunno: :clueless:  I've did it before, but there is a bunch of variables I guess, like tube size, power or manual steering, auto on floor, column, 4 speed, and year headers were made. These things probably play a role in the installation .

    I have hedman headers and they fit with stock or mini starter...and powersteering  :working: they bolt right in with no mods... did you buy the cheap ones ???

    I have the same thing, but I did have to make a couple of dents to the tubes going around the power steering box, and the one tube running by the mini-starter. Don't worry about the ceramic coating. It's not like it will crack and chip off.

    The best way to make clearance dings is to use a socket and hit the socket with a hammer and will make a perfect shaped ding.......  :working:

    I paid $369.00 for them and really don't want to mess them up . It's killing me both places is real close . Where it hits the shaft is by the joint and I can force it by however with time it would wear a hole .

    I'm not sure it would wear a hole. These are made of pretty thick steel. Have you disconnected the driver's side motor mount, and jacked the engine up a couple of inches. I didn't do that, but maybe that would help you here.  :dunno:

    Badjoey - the dings are very small and mine are by the starter and another little one by the pwersteering...very small..however mine will go right up into the car without tilting the motor or anything... mine is close to the shaft but no dings there and they fit fine...putting the drivers side in is tricky but they will fit!

    what heads r u running bad joey...says they wont fit with edelbrock heads but mine fit ???

    I took the drivers motor mount bolt out and rocked the motor way over . I got the header in it is just that when I let the motor down things do not line up right . It is so close in both spots it could just be a matter of when they welded the pipes into the ends .

    Another concern I have while we are on this is :
    I'm using ceramic headers trying to avoid rust .
    I bought a complete stainless steel exhaust including hangers and clamps .
    BUT the part at the end of the header that goes to the exhaust pipe is regular steel and prone to rust . I know about heat resistant paint but I never seen any that held up .I would really hate to see that one part of my exhaust all rusty ?

    Here is yet another question if anyone can help . When I step oh the gas will the top of the motor rock towards the pass or the drivers side ? :stirpot:
